    West Nile Virus

Anyone know how bad are the mosquitos in May, I am a bit worried about West Nile Virus that you get from them, I understand that there was 41 cases in Florida last year.

Never seen a mosquito, never been bitten by a mosquito all the times I've been to Florida (and that's a LOT). Something like 80 million people visit Florida every year so I don't think 41 cases of anything at all is something to get alarmed about.

If you have a search for 'mossies' on the top link, you'll find lots of info about them.

I'm in Florida right now (January) and it seems to be a mozzie free zone at the moment.

Unlike Blottie-they make a meal of me-and I really suffer.

Sprays and lotios containing DEET are the most effective-but you need to use them with caution as it is a poison.

The receptionist in the doctor's (where I needed to go on one trip) likes to go walking-and she finds if she sprays Deet on her t shirt, hat, shorts and top and then removes and washes them when she gets home-she's fine.

We usually take some good insect repellants like Jungle Formula for use while going to possible mosquito-encounter areas like Boggy Creek. So far, it has just been a precaution and nothing untoward has happened.

Get the odd bite but less than we do when we holiday in Europe. A good insect repellant should do the trick, I like OFF.

Never seen one in Florida and we have been at different times of the year.

May be its just certain skin types they like??

i got bitten quite a few times on my legs in dec, nice scars! and i started worrying about west nile virus, i couldnt shake off the tiredness! so i actually looked it up! never got bitten at all the first time we went, so will be wary next time and take repellant! we read up that cos of the 3/4 hurricanes it had cleared the stagnant water of mossie eggs so the chances were there would be less! obviously thought i was a nice meaty subject!

The mossies always make a meal of me too, didn't get bitten last October though so am hoping not to in February as well. Was thinking about taking a vitimin suppliment as suggested in a previous thread, starting two weeks before we go.[msnsmile2]
Think that would be less messy than the other suggestion of smearing yourself in Marmite.
