I've never been bitten, but Dave must be quite tasty, got bitten quite badly when we were at Crazy golf one evening next to water. His hand swelled up like a golf ball and we had to get some cream from the drugstore. That was early November in 2000, never had any probs. since

Mozzie's biting seaon is around Sept - Nov. I have been bitten a few times. Only the females bite and they need the blood to lay thier eggs. In Florida they put out "Sentries" Which are chickens in cages in woods etc. If one of them dies they check to see what it died from and if it is west nile or encephalitis they then do a big spray operation. I can rememeber a few years ago there was a high encephalitis risk Disney closed all their water parks early to avoid the peak biting times around sunset. The most vulnerable to both these deseases are the very young and the elderly.

I live in Canada and I know all about WNV as we also now have West Nile Virus, hence my question how bad are the mosquitos in May, I know that you MUST use DEET in your repellent for more information please visit the US Center for disease control http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/west...ntion_info.htm
few people will get sick/die from this disease but prevention is your best bet, knowing how to protect yourself from West Nile is now just a way of life in North America. This is not something to get over worried about.
Our family have so far been fortunate. We have been going to Florida for 8 years, and none of us have had a bite so far. I believe that aswell as insect repellents, Avon Skin-So-Soft products are good for keeping them at bay. Chloe

This subject is very close to my heart right now as I have a son in hospital with meningitis and encephalitis who is undergoing tests for west nile virus as we had recently returned from Florida and he has the symptons which are associated with WNV. Before this happened to us, I would never have believed that something like this could have happened, but I would like everyone to be aware that no matter how small the odds may be, there IS a chance. We are still awaiting the test results on this, because obviously in England people - even in the medical field and whatnot, are not aware of this virus. However the effects are catastrophic. Take whatever precautions you can and whilst my family are going through a nightmare right now, obviously don't build it out of proportion either. Just be safe.
