    Coccyx Pain on flying?

My coccyx was damaged by a boy at my school when I was 11 and whenever I sit for long periods on firm seating it can be quite painful.

Our last flight was in Economy and have to say it was agony for me, I have seen such things as coccyx cushions which have a section removed at the back to relieve the pressure.

I wondered if anyone on the forum had similiar problems and if they had tried the cushion?

This could be one for you Nostromo!!!

I had the same type of pain and would especially feel it in movie theater seats. It actually turned out to be a Pilonidal Cyst which was triggered when I fell down some stairs. I went to the emergancy room and I was told I had broken my coccyx and boy were they WRONG. This was over 20 years ago, but on occasion I still feel it. You may want to have a doc check it out.

I have exactly the same problem, I broke my coccyx 16 years ago and the pain is still incredible if I sit still for any length of time whether on a plane, in a car or theatre or cinema etc. I havent found anything that satisfactorily helps to ease the pain and spend most of the flight walking around or sat " sideways " on in the chair. Which isnt the easiest thing to do in economy it has to be said.

Some people can have this problem even without a history of injury. This is called Coccidynia. Treatment is not always easy and the worst cases have needed surgery.

Mostly though, a cushion pad or similar can work. If you cannot get hold of one when you need it, an often effective alternative solution is to use a strategically placed ST. Two together to increase the cusioning effect could be better.

i to have had this problem, believe it or not i have the aches when sit here at the computer for to long (am not always here even if it says i am) i fell twice in a pregnancy 20 years ago, fell into the sitting position, was in agony!!!!! always got a cushion behind , when i had my last child i was told as i was in agony that as i had forceps delivery in theatre they believe it dislodged the tail end of my spine, so along with the knee problem i too like many others suffer from the coccyx pain! strange never knew so many suffered with this and this is just on here! luckily mine is only bad when sitting as in the flight to florida for long periods of time,i just sit forward if i can and take pressure off.

I also suffer from great pain if I sit too long. I always take a cushion with me on the plane and this helps. Since I joined this forum I have been suffering, spending too much time on here.[msnwink]
On Friday my husband, bless him, turned up with a lovely comfy chair, I have had no pain over the weekend.[clap]

My mum fell down the stairs over 25 years ago and has suffered with the same thing as you Anita ever since. Her DR said that although he would love to be able to diagnose something to help there really was little he could do, as he suffered with a similar condition. So she tends to walk about a bit, sit sideways like Lesley but generally just feels relieved to get to Florida and off the plane.[msnsmile]

I found a travel cushion in our local Poundland which is great, I've used it on the last few trips and found I had a much more pleasant trip. Rather than being a solid cushion it has cut out areas, but I found if you sit on it, it relieves pressure at the base of the spine, putting it behind helps the lower back area and the main reason I bought it (as I suffer from fibrositis in my neck) behind the head gives better relief than the neck cushions. (also useful as it folds up so small when deflated just to keep in my bag when we go to the parks and if going to any of the shows with hard seats just to make them more comfortable.

I fracture my coccyx 8 tears ago when I fell off my roller skates playing skater hockey ( don't ask!)less than 48 hours later I had a 10 hour flight to Phoenix onlt manage with the help of painkilling suppositories. Fortunately I have had no long term effects but if you have it must be agony!! I found mostly as I have got older the pain is in my knee (long term problem) and in my hips guess that is a real sign of old age[msnsad]

Like LiesaAnna I didn't know coccyx pain was so common.

I too get it result of child birth where it either broke or bent back on itself, they never x-rayed me!!

Like Lesley said trying to get comfy on an economy seat isn't the easiest thing to do. If the seats were big enough you could place 2 cushions underneath you with a gap in between to relieve the pressure. The coccyx cushion sounds great. Where did you see those Anita? I'm flying next month and if I could get hold of one I could 'test-drive' it and report back[msnsmile2]
