    Attractions

My family and I are going to Florida for the first time next year. My dad isn't a big fan of theme parks- will there still be plenty of other things for him to do?? So far all we've established is that he'd like to go to the Kennedy Space Centre and Daytona raceway. He also likes spending the day on a beach so where are the nicest beaches?

    Thanks in advance

Many people think that Florida is only about theme parks, but that just isnt the case. There are beautiful beaches an hour or so away & the area around Boggy Creek is a wildlife haven. He may even enjoy Animal Kingdom if he wanted to join you at one of the parks as there is lots of educational & conservational stuff as well as the rides. Im sure you will soon be inundated with suggestions & the problem will be deciding which to choose!!!!!!!

If you and your dad want a great day out, drive up to St Augustine. America's oldest city. It's about 90 minutes north on I-95. There is a great old Spanish fort and plenty of nice tourist type shops. Then the beach is the best on the East Coast. The city of St Augustine Beach is on it's own island. You have to take two bridges to get there. But the sand goes out a long way when the tide is out and I used to love just walking collecting shark's teeth!

There are plenty of other things to do. Plan a day out in WINTER PARK with its gardens, shops, galleries and scenic boat cruise. Your father may like TRAINLAND Inc if he is a train enthusiast. I am sure he won't complain if asked to spend a few hours in one of the big SHOPPING MALLS. Another interesting place is ORLANDO SCIENCE CENTER with a nice observatory open late on weekends. All of you can plan to go into OLD TOWN on a Saturday Evening with its bustling, old-fashioned Fairground Atmosphere and Car Cruise.

Dog racing is very popular in Florida. We used to love having an evening at one. You can book a table to have dinner there and all tables have a view of the course. We are not gamblers but used to bet the minimum on each race which back then (pre kids)was about $1.It was a really fun evening out. I think there is a track near Orlando, though I'm not sure. We have been to the Sarasota track and the Fort Myers track.

Oh and what about golf. There is certainly no shortage of courses.

    The possiblities are endless.

One good tip, try and buy "A Brit's Guide" book

There are plenty to go at.

We have bought a few for our villa.

I'll DM you with some of the titles to get you going.

    Well worth the money

For something with a nature angle try a trip up to Silver Springs at Ocala, or have a day at Lake Louisa state park (just up hwy-27).

This is also going to sound really lame but you'd be amazed how nice it is; just spend a few days lounging by the pool, occasionally popping to the fridge for a cold drink, and head under the shade of the lanai when the sun gets too hot.

Yeah, he could spend the day at Clearwater while rest of the family is at Busch Gardens?
