Are American DVD's compatible with UK machines?
IE are DVD's in the UK still on the PAL system like videos are or are DVD's universal?

I believe DVDs are region coded in an attempt to control distribution. i.e. North America DVD will have a different region number to UK/Europe DVDs. But as always it is possible (and common) to make your DVD player multi region so that it can play DVDs from other regions including North America. Happy buying.
They are a different region code, however most DVD players can be made to play all regions by means of a code(search the internet for your model and use the the words 'region crack code') or most places now sell region free players for as little as 25 quid.

Practically all new DVD players bought in the UK are multi-region although manufaturers are not supposed to advertise the fact. I have Region 1 and Region 2 DVDs roughly 50:50 and they all play perfectly all right on my 5-year-old Rotel DVD player, as do all Indian DVDs and R4 DVDs from Australia. Furthermore, you can get any R1 DVD from www.playusa.com based in Jersey at the same time as it is released in the USA, at the same equivalent cost and with no shipping charge to mainland UK.

If you look at the site carefully, you'll find that you can 'convert' the prices to £ by clicking on the little Union Jack on the left side.

Sometimes you need to be careful with PlayUSA especially if you are buying DVD's that are over £18(Box sets etc...) Sometime when the postie delivers you get a customs charge which he will demand.
Usually when you order the DVD's it will let you know if you may get the charge.
Bit of a con really seeing as the DVD's are shipped from Jersey or Belgium!
