Thanks for the tips guys [xmas1] Clearwater sounds like a lovely place, particularly if it's close to Busch Gardens.

Does anyone know what the chances are of there being a Daytona 500 race on when we go (28th July-6th August)? The website's events list only goes up to July 1st at the moment and I'm hoping that's not the end of the racing calendar.

We went to Busch Gardens for the day during our last trip to Florida and then spent the evening at Clearwater, the beach is absolutely amazing, on of the best we have visited.[msnsmile2]

We have always stopped in a very small hotel in Clearwater for a night or two. It only has about 16 rooms, all with kitchen. We like the smaller hotels , and this one, like many others in Clearwater, has a dock on one side where you can watch for dolphins and other wildlife, as well as the usual pool. And all in walking distance of the beautiful beach and pier.

One of the best holidays we ever had was when we only booked the flights and car for the first week (villa booked for second week) and then just drove and stopped where we felt like it. Although, aligator alley was a let down, we expected to see loads of wildlife, but saw none...well the kids and dads swore they had seen things but I think they were telling porkies.

Another option which we enjoyed was the Salvador Dali museum in St Petersburg.

If you are going to Daytona raceway you could combine it with a trip to daytona beach? And if you go to the Space centre you could also drive the short distance to CoCo beach, both worth a visit.
