My wife and I flew Thompson from Birmingham to Sanford in October. We opted not to pay for the meals and they stuck all of us who had opted for this at the back of the plane together, and made sure that we didn't get a meal. Someone in front of us asked for one (they reckoned they had booked a meal), but the attendant told them that they only carried the exact number of meals for those who had booked them. Therefore, if you want the meal I think it's best to book it.

In terms of the flights, I though they were OK. Leg room was adequate, service was good outbound (but non-existent coming back), and I think we got what we paid for in comparison with the extra cost of flying Virgin from Manchester (ie we got cheap and cheerful). By the way, don't ever sit at the back of a 767 as you get hit by the trolleys turning as the attendants try to heave them into the slots in the galley - it kept my wife awake the whole of the flight.

Sometimes there are extra meals available.
We went to Ibiza in October with Mytravel and did not pay for meals.
On the way out the cabin crew gave us a meal. I said we hadn't booked, she said they had us down for a meal and there were spares anyway. My wife ate her's, i had just finished a big sandwich so didn't take one. The cabin crew then announced that they had spare meals if anyone wanted to pay £5 for one. We offered the money to the girl who gave us ours but she refused to accept it and said just take it as we were down for one anyway.

We have shares in mytravel (bought when Airtours at £2 a share, now 4p - don't ask us for share tips!) and we used the shareholder line to book a flight to Portugal last year. Checked out the price through Direct Holidays and got a brilliant deal, then booked it through the shareholder line with an extra 10% discount, plus free travel insurance, prebooked seats, free meals and the bottle of Champagne (Mumms) presented on the plane. You do need to book 28 days before the flight though, to get the discount etc. It was a great start to the holiday and with the shares so cheap, might be worth a dabble (not guaranteeing how long they will be around though).

I have flown with Mytravel on countless times and never had any problems. They are only using the Airbus and 767 this year so you don't get the old DC10 anymore.

The inflight service is the same in both, although I would upgrade to premier Gold for the extra big seats (£130 each). You can upgrade at the airport as well.

Like they say you do get what you pay for, but at a fraction of the cost that Virgin charge.
