Our 35th (coral) Wedding Anniversary[msnsmile2] – having had a long day and lost an hour we did not wake up until 9am! Through the porthole we had a perfect view of the QM2.
We opened our anniversary cards, including ones from family which we had been carrying around for the last few weeks. We were too late for breakfast in our restaurant, the Mauritania, so went for the self-service breakfast buffet in the Lido.
Returning to our cabin we found a signed card from the captain together with a photograph frame and an invitation to have a photograph taken by the onboard photographers to mark the occasion and a certificate to say we had celebrated our anniversary on board. Finally, much to my surprise, a huge arrangement containing 35 coral roses arrived from Cliff. I gathered later a note had been passed to our wonderful steward, Sebastian, who had organized it through the on board florist.
After spending the anniversary money we had found in our cards, looked for our boarding photographs, sent emails home to the family it was lunchtime. Having had a late breakfast we decided to skip lunch and go up on deck for some brisk walks round the deck. It was a beautiful day, the sea was very smooth but it was sooo cold. We soon opted for a steamer-chair on the sun deck out of the wind.
After all that fresh air we were first in the queue for afternoon tea – a very civilized affair with dainty sandwiches and cakes – then back to our cabin to get changed into the required formal evening wear for the evening .
Cunard had thoughtfully laid on a special dinner for our Anniversary – well not quite true – it was actually a dinner to celebrate the ‘historic tandem transatlantic crossing of QM2 and QE2’ with a superb identical menu being served on both ships but it did mean we had a lovely souvenir menu printed with our Anniversary date .
We finally got to meet all of our table – a couple who only lived 10 miles away from us in the UK, an elderly widower on his first holiday alone, and three single women – one Swiss, an Australian who had been on the ship since February and an American who was going to marry someone in Ireland who she had ‘met’ in an Internet chat room! Finally at the end of the meal we were presented with a cake and all the waiters sang ‘Happy Anniversary’.
After a few drinks with the other couple we all four decided to dance the night away at the Yacht Club. Before retiring to our cabin Cliff and I took a stroll round the deck by moonlight, agreed it had been a perfect way to celebrate and decided to see if it was possible to renew our marriage vows on board.[msnsmile2][msnsmile2][msnsmile2]
