Hi Phil and Mel,
Would you not be better considering one or two categories lower on the car type scale? The difference in cost would then enable you to get the car for 18 days probably for the cost of 14 days hire of a luxury car.
We usually get an intermediate or full size model. One year we were upgraded to a luxury and got a Chrysler 300M - very nice car, full leather trim , electronic compass etc
but heavier on petrol than our usual Dodge Stratus or Dodge Intrepid. Nice to get the free upgrade for a fortnight but the difference in quality would not really encourage me to get a luxury each time we go. Just a thought - the choice is ultimately yours.
Have a brilliant time when you go, and safe motoring too!
Kevin

Hello all,
Bit of a dilemma, [8]wonder if anyone can help?
With regards to car hire for our holiday we have two options
1)18 days car hire (£495.60) - convenient but expensive for extra four days
or
2)14 days car hire (£354.00) plus taxi from MCO to Four Corners (Hwy 27)plus taxi to Dollar depot on International Drive to pick up rental car.
Anyone have any opinions on what they would do in this instance??[msneek]

Seems like you guys in the UK are being scammed! I can get a local car for about $120.00 a week. I'd look into contacting the rental companies here in the USA. May get a better rate.
Have fun.

We pay around $27 a day for an upgraded car with the company we use.....sometime we use our own Ins......sometime we use the hire cars one...... walk away ins for a week is around $140 I think........but that covers everything you can think of.....
KevinT,
You are completely spot on with your comments[msnwink]!!
We had initially decided to go for an intermediate car, but decided to "splash out" on a luxury. I really wanted to ask the question to see if anyone thought that we might be able to get away with taxis for the first four days. It seems that's not the case[msnsmile2] Thinking about it, I could have worded the initial post better, but I still thank you for all your comments [msnsmile2][msnsmile2][msnsmile2]

I have a platinum visa which assures me full coverage on any rental in the USA or Europe.
I wasn't trying to upset anyone, just trying to help.

That explains it then Jeff. We don't have anything like that over here (except perhaps with a Platinum AmEx) and, whilst the basic car rental itself is relatively inexpensive, it's the insurances which make up the rest of the price.
In general, it's much cheaper for Brits to rent at an all inclusive price in the UK than it is to rent via the US as to the US price has to be added insurances. And the car rental provided via the links above on the forum are one of the cheapest around for Brits as it includes all insurances, taxes and additional drivers.

Actually Blott, we do have something but I am not sure how much cover it provides. I used to have a Platinum Mastercard with Lloyds TSB and this did NOT provide international Car hire cover. But I have been recently upgraded to PREMIER and this does provide permanent International Travel Insurance (upto £5 million for user & spouse) and some sort of Car Hire cover. I have not checked the small print on this yet, but will do so asap and get back to this thread.

Phil and Mel, do not waste a precious moment of your holidays taking cars back and waiting for taxis to turn up.
However, I am with you on the extra days cost. I get real mad if we have booked 19 days and then pay a premium price for the last days when they check cars in and out every day.It is clearly the car hire peoples decision and not the agents fault.
Well we've booked the 18 days now so,I guess we'll just have to live with the cost
