    North South East and West

As most hire cars have a compass, and it is generally accepted that whilst in Florida, directions are given including the N, S, E or W, I would really appreciate if anyone giving directions on any of the topics would give a compass direction as well please.

I have been several times but still not sure some times when directions are given e.g. to find a supermarket and they say turn right or left etc.

Not being picky but would honestly appreciate the extra info.

    cheers
    Maggie

The trouble is Maggie, unless I was there now looking at the compass I wouldnt be able to remember which way it was other than left or right ? I am not sure I understand how left and right could cause confusion though ?

I am not sure if it is wise to rely on a compass while following North-South or East-West roads. Those directions refer to the overall disposition of the road which can be very long. In the US, ODD numbered roads irrespective of class are categorised to go North-South while EVEN numbers go East-West. But within a restricted area, this can be very confusing.

For example, Interstate-4 is a East-West Road, but within Orlando it mostly runs in a North-South direction. This means that around Exit 72 on the I-4, you could be going due North on the compass while actally heading 'East' on the road itself.

Likewise, SR417, though categorised as North-South, is closer to the East-West axis in Orlando-Kissimmee area.

I find it's much easier to say right, left, straight on, etc and have no idea what direction I'm facing when I'm giving directions from the UK! The only thing I know is where places are.

Should have been a boy scout I guess!

Didn't want to uoset everyone - I'll keep quiet in future!!!!

I just thought that when it's your first time, or finding a new thing it might be helpful because I know when I was new I could not believe how many Dyas Inns, Howard Johnsons, Publix, etc etc so I felt really lost and sometimes just stopping and getting my barings helped.

    sorry everyone

i think i know what you mean, when we had been to old town or the beltz shopping places we were relying on friends in the car in front, when we lost them, we were travelling in one direction when someone in our van piped up wasnt that reading south / north (whatever it was at the time )which made us realise we were heading in the opposite direction!! we know what i mean, we dont go mad driving in florida hubbies not to confident as its such a very big place to get lost, we stick to nearby attractions and theres plenty to do which dosent involve driving for to long

You got it! When you leave Universal and drive towards US192, you use I-4 WEST but actually drive SOUTH.

Or, when coming from MCO you turn into SR417 SOUTH to go to the villas, you're really going WEST.
