    Quick sim card question

    Hi All
We fly out on thursday and will be glad to get there, it has been a tense couple of weeks. This forum has been a great help and source of information thank you all [msnsmile].
My question is can anyone tell me any places on International drive that i can get a prepay/pay as you go sim card to put in my unlocked sony mobile?
will this come with any credit? I only want to use the phone for emergencies whilst in florida not to phone home.

    Thanks Chris&Teresa

    Hi Chris & Teresa,
If your Sony phone is triband (or quadband)it should be useable over in Florida using your UK sim. It will lock onto nearest service providers (usually AT&T or T Mobile)Downside of this method is - it's expensive as you will be billed by your UK provider.
I've never found a place yet over there which will supply just the sim card and airtime (but I'm still looking - maybe someone else here has? ). Normally you have to buy a US pay as you go phone which will have a sim card and sometimes airtime. Never found one of those as cheap as Chrisj says (but haven't looked on I - Drive). Main two I found were AT&T "Go" phone (around $80+) and Tracfone. I have the AT&T one, a basic Nokia which works fine while we're there. With a lot of the PAYG phones the airtime runs out after 30 days even if its unused, and the sim runs out after 45 days (so I get a new one - free from AT&T each time we go, and just then buy some airtime. Tracfone do reconditioned ones from $30 but they have to be bought via internet, and would be delivered to a US address). I think Cingular now do a PAYG phone too now.
Try a search on here for Tracfone and you'll find other threads on the cellphones and probably the Tracfone and AT&T websites too.

We have a US Tracfone which we use for emergencies when we are out and about in Florida (booking ahead to restaurants at the end of a long day usually [msnwink]). It's not cheap and you even get billed for incoming calls but is worth it (just about) for the convienience.

If you are staying in a private villa then they will have their own phone which you can give the number of to friends and family.

Hi I`ve used mobiles in USA & Cuba but I fird it very expensive.
Since then I by an international phone card in FL. If you have a Virgin Holiday their phone cards are good value, just ask you local Virgin Rep.

You can buy these phonecards pretty much anywhere in Florida - Wal-Mart and 7-11 spring to mind.

I thought that Virgin (USA) did a pay as you go sim card that fits into Triband phones. I will also led to believe that they sold them in Walmart. I could be wrong. This was one thing i was going to investigate when i was next over in Florida. Anybody have any further they can add on Virgin pay as you go.

If you have a virgin PAYG sim, if your phone is Tri-Band you can call them to change it so
you can make and receive calls in America, What you have to do is change to a direct debit
to pay your bill, you can still top up etc as normal,

    This is what we did

Understand what you are saying but i was thinking that Virgin USA offer a PAYG sim which an american mobile number and you pay local rate as opposed to international rate. Im sure somebody said you only paid 50 cents per min but i could be wrong.
