    is it safe

while stopping on the 192 is it safe to drive into downtown orlando, it looks great as you drive by it or look at it from international drive.

We have driven into Downtown Orlando and felt total safe.
However we did take a wrong turning on the way out once and ended up in a run down district with lots of gangs stood on the corners of the street. Really like you would find in any inner city areas in the UK.
If you stay to the light populated areas you should be fine.

AS Amy said, most of Downtown Orlando is safe, provided you're there at a reasonable hour and in a group. It is inadvisible to get lost at night and if you still do, keep going till you find directions to a familiar landmark like I-4, Universal, WDW etc. Since the I-4 cuts through the middle of Orlando in general, its location will be signposted almost everywhere.

It is a modern city, you take the same precautions you would anywhere. Not as tourist as it once was though

I can remember on our second visit to Orlando in 1990, we went to Church Street Station (we first wwent on an organised trip)we went on the local bus from ID which was OK going but we came back on the bus at 2 in the morning and it was certainly an experience, we had down and outs, people trying to sell us things! there certainly were no tourists on it but we were OK, there were 6 of us, when we got off on ID the driver said "I carn't believe you stayed on", it certainly took us through some seedy parts.[msnscared][msnscared]

We briefly drove through whilst trying to find Church Street Station. We were not impressed. Didn't go back.

Don't forget to keep your car doors locked, just as a precaution.

Like it has been wisely said before, one must take sensible precautions in any big city. Having said that, Orlando on the whole seems safer than, say, Birmingham, Glasgow or Manchester.
