They definitely fly, we have loads of them wandering around Bridgewater, but I've been told various names for them[msnscared] - my kids nicknamed them ooka pookas!
They're sand hill cranes and yes, they do fly and look really graceful in flight as they fold up their necks (like herons) and have their legs trailing behind them. They also make an unholy racket if you upset them and it's illegal to feed them.
Adults (about 3'6" tall) have the red head stripe, beak and eyes and the little ones are a sort of beigy colour, fluffy, with no red and have eeeeennnnnnormously loooong legs! Anyone notice that their 'knees' work backwards? If you want to see a pic of a baby one, you'll have to look at my OV ad!
