this is probably a really stupid question, but how can you tell if you have a machine readable passport?

i think on the photo page at the bottom there is a row of numbers/letters which is machine readable. if it is not there then you haven't.

Almost everyone now has a machine readable passport. At the bottom of the page with your photo on it, it should have <<<<1234596079788 (but different numbers!)>>>>.

Well mine did, but I think the earlier European ones didn't have it but they've probably been around now for more than ten years? My mother's has the machine readable code and hers expires in 2005 after ten years.

Machine readable came in with the red type uk passports.
