This statement is not true. In certain counties villas cannot be rented for a few days. However in Charlotte County which includes areas such as Cape Haze, Rotunda and Englewood, there is no such restriction and plenty of owners would be willing to take a short booking.

Thats interesting,Ruth. I had always believed there to be a week minimum on the coast. Indeed,I was told that a couple of years ago by a Rotunda owner. Perhaps the rules are changing

I will bear that in mind for our next side trip

Ruth is correct. We own a villa in Rotonda and there is no minimum stay requirement.I also think as i said before that owners would look at a 2 or 3 night rental if they had a gap and especially if it was a way of tempting a guest back for a longer stay.

Having a villa in Rotonda I can also confirm what Ruth and Andrew have said. I am happy to let for a few nights if we have a vacancy as it has led to longer stays of 2 to 3 weeks. If the booking is several months in advance I will not take it if it will spoil the chance of a longer let i.e. someone wanting 3/4 days in the middle of a two week gap.

Maureen, isnt it a dilemma on short bookings(a bird in the hand and all that)

We rented a house on the rotunda when our house was rented and loved the friendliness and the canals.

I believe the plot prices went down to $5000 a few years back(what an opportunity!)

The lady we stayed with had bought 3 for around $8000 each

On our first day there I went out on a bicycle ride with a friend and we got completely lost;we stopped to ask the way but neither of us could remember our address.(For those that dont know Rotunda is like a giant wheel) Took us hours to stumble across the right road.

    Heather,
Try $50,000-00 for a plot backing onto a canal now!!!

It is a dilemma as to whether to take the 'bird in the hand' outlook on short lettings. Fortunately most of the ones we get are late bookings so the problem does not arise too often.

I can confirm what Andrew says about the prices. We bought the plot next to our villa (on the canal)for $10,000 at the beginning of 2002. Similar plots are now going for $50,000. I wish I had bought more!

I always give our guests a map of Rotonda but one family left their suitcases, went out to buy food and spent the next hour and a half trying to find their way back!
