    Gas BBQ Rental

Can anyone please tell me where I can hire a gas BBQ from? I am staying at the Abbey at Westhaven at begining of September. The property management company do not have them and do not know where to rent them. Has anyone else rented one? If so, what is required? Deposit? Cost of rental etc..

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Mel

Is this your own home or one that you have rented ? If you have rented it direct from the owner I would suggest you ask them to locate one for you, they may even buy one to remain at the home as a lot of guests like one. Normally homes either have their own or are available to hire from the owners Management company so unfortunately I dont know of any independent companies that do this.Check as well with the owners that they will allow one, if they havent provided one there is a chance they dont allow them.

I am renting. I have already asked the owner. They do not have one nor wish to get one due to some people not cleaning the BBQ after use. I know I can purchase a coal BBQ but they are messy and would rather use gas. The owner doesn't know where to rent one from and also say that the management company doesn't either.

Hopefully someone can help, thanks anyway.

You may have a problem due to the fire chief saying BBQ are a major fire risks in the Villas; don't forget these villas are treated like a hotel and the owner is not in total control of what can and can not be done. Some villas actualy have NO BBQ allowed due to fire risk notices; think it may depend on which county the villa is in.
Basicaly: the pool netting and a BBQ don't mix, a BBQ needs to be more than a couple yards from the Villa so that means outside.

There are plenty of homes with gas barbecues because it isnt against any regulations to have one. It is ADVISABLE for barbecues to be outside and away from the screen areas but it isnt a strict regulation and therefore owners do have the right to decide whether to have one or not.I have one because the deck is large enough for it to be away from the screen and high enough that the fumes shouldnt clog in the screen area. Unless chained down most guests move them inside anyway rather than use them outside.

P.S I meant unless the barbecue is chained down not the guests

    Hi Lesley.
If you read what I have said; I didn’t say categorically that BBQ were not allowed. It is a fact that some villas have the sign up because I’ve been there and seen them. I don’t know what the status of the referenced villa is; I was offering up some reasons why obtaining a BBQ may be problematic for that particular circumstance.

Speaking as someone that burnt a hole in the top of the screen; I suppose at the end of the day it is how serious you take the Fire Chiefs advisory!

<blockquote id="quote" class="ffs">quote: fumes shouldnt clog in the screen area[/quote] Not sure how any fumes would do this as it is mesh with holes in it?

The problem with the net screens is that they are inflammable and, because they have a plastic content, if they catch fire they can 'rain' melted plastic onto people, much in the way that polystyrene ceiling tiles can. Hot, melted plastic is really dangerous on skin as it continues to 'burn' at really high temperatures and can cause deep burns, even though the surface area of the burn may be small.

As you say, it's up to each home owner to decide what to provide in their home. The Fire Marshal guidelines are there for the safety of everyone using the home and guests should ensure that they follow these, as they are for their own safety and that of the property they're renting.

To respond to the original enquiry, I personally don't know anywhere that does this.

Its a little like a filter in a fryer Blott, while it is a mesh screen the holes are very small and if you barbecue food often enough in the same spot and the screen is quite low the mesh clogs with grease , one heavy rainfall later and the grease is all over the pool deck.

Dave , they may have had signs up because the owner didnt want any guests using one, and that is the owners right of course, I just wanted to clarify that the regulations themselves dont stop an owner having one.

We bought an electric grill type thing for our villa, not quite a BBQ but we can cook outside on the lanai with it and it gives the same feeling of a BBQ. Remove the electric lead and the whole thing can be dishwashed.

It was a very reasonable price and could possibly come out at the same price as hiring a BBQ.

Thanks for everyones help. I didn't realise the question would raise so many issues. I think I might buy an electric grill and cook indoors - not the same effect but obviously safer. Other guests renting the villa after myself can then benefit.
