Do you know how much above the normal rate they charge for fuel? (I have not got my credit card statement yet[msnscared])

I'm not sure Ruth to be honest but would not have thought it was that cheap.

The Gold option is generally an extra £12 per week over fully inclusive so for 2 weeks, this is £24 i.e. approx $43. I'd thus imagine it could be anything around this figure or more likely more. It obviously also depends on the car size you had.

What really got up my nose with the gold option was the tank of petrol. A good deal if you're only going for a week but if you're going for 3 weeks you're paying extra for the other 2 weeks and not receiving the goods. Yes, okay you are getting the additional drivers but not a tank each week. A fairer price would be to have the additional weeks at slightly less.[^]

The Gold option works well for one or two weeks but not for longer periods where it would be cheaper to go for the Fully Inclusive option.<blockquote id="quote" class="ffs">quote:Originally posted by porky

    Hi Ruth,

When I once booked a seven seater with another company and did not take their 'Gold' option the hire company they used in the USA, Alamo charged $56.00 for the first tank for fuel and then told me to bring it back empty.

Imagine my anger when I came to fill it up during our holiday, when it was running on vapour, and I could ony squeeze $29.00 into the tank [msnmad]

Needless to say I got a receipt for the fuel and demanded a refund when we left the car back with Alamo. Ever since then I have took the 'Gold' option as we have had more than one driver but I did feel you were getting ripped off for fuel if you took the basic option and the extra few pounds per week for any driver and fuel was a good buy.

We have just returned and having rented a jeep off this site, and would do it again, we were charged £31. something for the petrol at the pick up desk I don't think it cost a lot less than that when we filled it up, the only question I had was when on empty, how much petrol is there after the light comes on, and why do they not put the cars manuel in the car so you can find out where everything is?? Oh for a crystal ball!!

    Ravtino,

£31.00 is $56.00 (seems a common figure[msnoo]) at around $2.00/gallon for gas thats 28 US gallons in the tank. I have to doubt your jeep had a tank anywhere near that big.

I just don't like being treated like an idiot by the hire companies. I also want to make it clear this was Alamo's policy not the people who I hired the car through. It made the gold option more palatable the next time because as I saw it I was getting all my drivers insured for £20/week extra and the fuel was 'free'.

It's not just the cost of the petrol, someone has to be employed to take it and fill it up!
