    new york by train

I was talking to some american tourists in Stratford upon avon recently and they told me that they get a car train down from new york to orlando which is quite inexpensive and saves them driving from new york. Has anyone done this the other way round from orlando to new york or are you not able to take hire cars out of florida state? sounds an interesting tour![msncool]

No, don't really like travelling for hours on trains but you can check it out at www.amtrak.com although I'm not sure why you would want to take your rental car as this is more expensive to transport on the train?

There is a car train.....I don't know if it runs from New York...I though it started just a few States up...it costs us a lot to go out of State with a hire car....you pay an extra fee to go through some States .....I think we paid over $500 for 3 days with a discount.....I found the cost of going by train a lot more than flying.....

The sites for the auto train are :-

    http://www.amtrak.com/trains/autotrain.html

    http://www.amtrak.com/plan/autotrainpol.html

The web site says the auto train travels from Sanford florida to Lorton Virginia ( just south of Washington)

The journey of 855 miles takes 16.5 hours non stop

I bet you would have to declare you’re travelling on the train to the hire co.

I personally have done the journey from Charleston to orlando taking about 9 hours , but that was a stopping train

I know at one point you couldn’t drive hire cars out of state, but have done so on several occasions now, always checking with hire company just in case

I didn’t realise the cost was yet another factor to take into account

I expect to pay for one way rental to drop off at another state

Why take the hire car; drop it and get another.

Interesting idea, think I would prefer to hop a plane, and hire a car when I got there though[msntongue]

It was about the $500 for one way 3 days..we have our own car hire Ins...if not that would of added $150 to the price.....put that againts the $450 we paid for 14 days in FL last week and its a lot of money.....they have a set fee to drive through some states.....like GA...and VA......other states you can be in with no fee.....I have no idea what the fee was for.....or about.......we have driven in and out of states with hire cars for years.......its cheaper if you're doing a round trip.......its cost $100 more to pick up a car from Boston airport and drop it somewhere else ....my husband only found that out on our last trip.....

We rode the auto train 2 years ago from Lorton, Virginia to Sanford. It was an interesting experience!! I hate to fly and this was a good alternative for us and allowed for us to bring our vehicle. I agree with what the others have said, though. In your case, I wouldn't bother with bringing an auto - you can rent another one when you get to your destination.

When we were poor students hubby and I took the train from New York to Kissimmee and back. It was a great experience and very econmical as wives went half price at the time. Bet they don't do that now.

Amtrack is expensive. Jet Blue and Spirit are offering $100 round trip flights. Why take the train?
