Alamo fuel policy
Does anybody know anything about the fuel policy with Alamo. On the voucher I have recieved it states that a full tank of gas must be bought at pick up and returned empty.I was reading one posting that said rental companies charge over the top for gas.Is there anyway round this
-
Unfortunately both Dollar and Alamo have both recently started doing this on the Fully Inclusive rates. The Gold rates still include a free tank of fuel and are a lot better value now.
-
Thanks for the info.
Would it be worth my while upgrading to a gold pakage.Any idea how much a full tank is at alamo compared to a regular gas station
-
John when I picked up my fully inclusive from Dollar last week, I asked whether to return the tank full or empty and was told full...
-
I suppose the best thing to do is to ask at reception and just hope you can fill it up yourself, even though it only saves a few quid every penny counts and can be spent instead on something that makes us smile

beer beer and more beer [msnsmile2]

When we were out over easter, Dollar charge 45 cents a gallon more than the average of 1.74 for a full tank.
-
On my rent thingy it states I get a full tank, so I should be ok I hope
-
Absolutely everyone gets a full tank Chris when they pick up their car - it's just a question of whether you have to fill it before you return it or not (if not, then how much you have to pay the car rental company to do it for you!).
Actually, I have before now been told to return it with the tank empty but filled it up myself (I'm not very good at following orders! ;)). I got my docket from the car checkers in and then returned to the car rental desk after airline check in with the docket and car rental documents and got a refund on my credit card for the fuel I paid for on arrival!
-
We were told to return it empty last year, but didnt see the point of driving round and round
to use the gas up, so it was returned with half a tank
-
I can quite imagine - they seem to be being somewhat erratic about how they do things and we cannot get a definitive answer out of them so are erring on the side of caution.
I know I've had to pay for gas on pickup at Sanford before but when I protested they told me if I brought it back full, they would wave the charge [msnwink]

when we picked up our dollar car at sanford it had a full tank and i had to sign a credit card authorization for the petrol, $54 bit steep and was told to return it empty. Previously when i have been i picked it up full and was told to return it full, with no charge for the fuel. Definately going for the gold option next time as it works out better value.

I didn't buy the Gold option because I was on my own and would be the only driver. So chose the Fully Inclusive option and was more than happy to return the car full of fuel. They would not let me do that. I protested at Alamo in Sanford this April and was told that if I didn't pay for the fuel there and then, that I couldn't have the car!!! The guy was quite unpleasant, and if I hadn't had to be somewhere by 5pm I would certainly have argued my case!!
He also gave my a really basic car too, so I drove to Orlando airport the next day, went straight into the Alamo rental area, complained that the steering wheel was too thick for me to grip properly (it was but I suppose I could have coped!!) and they invited me to choose a car from one section of the car park. Much nicer!!!

Whenever we've rented a car in Florida and even in Europe for the past few years they've insisted on charging me for fuel at an inflated price and bring the car back empty. This is obviously designed to make them a bit more profit but like most people I cant' be bothered to argue about it. Still its not nearly as bad as the scam we couldnt'avoid when we used to book holidays in Florida through tour operators who would include "FREE" car hire in the price of the holiday you just had to pay for insurance which could total well over £200 a week for a very basic car.

I think im going to phone tomorrow and check our Tank is already paid for in the price
we have paid, no way will I be happy to be charged something like $54
-
If you booked through us Chrisj, let me know your order number and I'll check it out for you.

Just phoned and it seems we can take the car back empty. Seems we have the
super duper all singing dancing cover. Wonder if the car drives itself, now
that would be nice :D

I just got this mail from my villa owner who organised my car hire.Which might help anybody renting from Alamo.Dont treat it as gospel but checking with them before signing seems to be the way:-
1. You can ask for the cost of the fuel to be charged to your card at the start of the rental and then bring the car back empty. This is what I usually do because it gets is out of the way at the outset. For a minivan I would expect this the be somewhere between $30 and $35 (this is around £20 at todays exchange rate).
2. You can ask them not to charge you for the fuel and then bring back the car with a full tank. If you do not bring it back with a full tank and they have to send an operative out to re-fuel the vehicle then they do charge you over the odds for the fuel and this will be billed to your credit card.
Please make sure you clarify the chosen option with the rental clerk at the desk. I did have one situation last year where my client paid for a tank of fuel and still brough it back full because he didn't realise he'd paid for it already. I tried (but failed) to get him a refund for this when he returned home - fuel issues are almost impossible to deal with post-event.
If you want to go for the gold rate then you would pay a further £30 here and this would then include the fuel and also give you up to 3 extra drivers.
Don't be put off by the two options above - there are both quite straightforward. You just need to check the rental agreement that you sign - if they have charged you for the fuel then bring the car back empty and if there is no charge on your card then bring it back full and make sure that the clerk checks the tank on your return.

we booked a sebring convertible with dollar through the forum link, paid the extra for more drivers and a full tank, it was better value. i remember in september last year we booked elsewhere for a mondeo size then upgraded to an sr5 jeep and paid them for the fuel.to return empty
we went all over last year ,keys etc so used loads of fuel. when i filled the jeep up from empty i realised they had taken a big cut for my full tank privilege.
i dont know about orlando but at sanford when we dropped the car off with dollar they appeared to have fuel on site, but i suppose they have to order it in and store it etc, still.
re the fuel its now $2.05 - $2.20 depending where you go, but it dont breaka the bank
