Wheelchair Facilities ?

We're going out in April, and taking both sets of Grandparents as a treat. My father has just been diagnosed with a form of Arthritis on top of a kidney complaint [msnsad]

Hopefull he will be well enough to fly, and if so he is unlikely to be well enough to walk round the parks. He doesn't want to miss out as my little boy is 3 and thinks they are all real and knows how happy he will be. Anyway, the question is - what sort of facilities do disney have and can we pre-book ?

Can we hire Wheelchairs (those little motorised tricycle type pref) ?
Is there a phone number we can ring for advice ?

Any other comments greatly appreciated.

You certainly won't upset anyone here...we all just KNOW that all characters are real and those who won't accept that ..well that's their loss.

Regarding the wheelchair, you can hire them from a couple of local companies one of which is Walker mobility and they would deliver to wherever you are staying if you want to make sure that you have one available. I'm not sure about pre booking at the parks I think it may be first come first served. If you wanted to be on the safe side you could maybe take (or hire) an ordinary wheelchair just in case so that you can be sure that Grandad won't miss out on any of the fun. The Local Red Cross in the UK will loan wheelchairs if you need them on a temporary basis if he does not have one in this country which will also make getting around the airport easier.
It adds a bit more to the planning time of your holiday trying to sort things like this out...don't forget the Travel Insurance....but it will be worth every moment when they see you little boys face.

hopefully you will be given 'preferential treatment' at the entrance to the attractions there is usually a wheelchair access which often cuts down some of the waitng time!

I'm a wheelchair user Gary and have no difficulties at all in getting around in Orlando.

As the place is so huge-I really would consider taking your own-it will work out much cheaper. Even just going round Walmart would be a pain for him as it's so huge.


As a special treat he can hire a motorised one at Disney -used to be about $30.

I went with my friend to Seaworld while hubby laid tiles in the villa and hired a motorised one. Great fun-and as it's a bit hilly there (just getting up the ramps to the stadiums-meant it was easy peasy)

You can hire Wheelchairs at the gate when you first entre any park......my mum had one this time and it made everything a lot easier........we got there early so that we wasted no park time picking it up......

Are the wheelchairs not free in Walmart......?

the motorised ones are at the supercentre one on I4 (herein refered to as the one near Oren Brown Road) but there were a couple of times when they were all out. I think they only have 4 or 5 tops.

Yes they are-but that was just an eg. With your own you can just turn up anywhere-whip it out the boot-and hey presto you're ready to roll.

Thinking of Downtown Disney, a stroll around Hotel Boardwalk , City Walk etc.

We would of needed a bigger car to have our own....we always fill the boot with shopping whereever we go.....[:I]

I returned from a trip in November with me Ma, and we had no problems getting a chair at SeaWorld and we didn't arrive there til late morning/midday. As mentioned above though, it is hilly there and it nearly killed me off pushing her[msnoo][msnoo]

Apart from that we managed to get one at WalMart and also at the Florida Mall.

Ask for a Ford Crown Victoria Extra large trunk. Good for W/C & shopping ( Full size car).

Not heard of them Babe-are they Dollar cars?

Also are they saloon cars. Anything too high (like a people carrier) and I have to be lifted in-which is a pain if I want to go out with daughter and son in law while hubby does some villa maintainance.

we are going in may and have bought a powered scooter off e bay (£200) BA will take it both ways for f ree

also if you buy a wheelchair in uk and take it with you you'll find that youll ALL go to the f ront of the queue at the check in at the airport

thinking of starting a business with my dad called "Rent a biddy"!!

also you can hire wheelchaiars and motorised scooters from Randys Mobility (they haev a web site) they deliver to and collect from your villa cheaper than renting them day by day at parks

I've just had a guest enquiring about hiring a motorised wheelchair and now have some answers for him.

He also asked about a pool lift! He said that he has heard of these and that they can be hired in order to help him in and out of the pool. Anybody have any ideas on this one?

Hi Matt,

The link below is to Discount Mobility USA. They hire out hoyer lifts but don't think they're suitable for the pool. They may be able to advise where one for the pool can be hired from.
