Hi
can anyone tell me how cold it can get on december evenings.
I have heard it can be very cold,but I suppose it depends on what climate you are used to.what should us brits pack in preparation, I cant stand the thought of being cold especially in florida.
we will need a coat, light jacket or cardigan ???? gloves, hat or bikini.:)

It can get very cold. I went very unprepared and had to buy a warm jacket and sweater. It was quite chilly first thing but had warmed up enough by mid morning to get the bikini out! Weird is how I would describe it.

It is often very warm until a few days before Christmas, so you can be swimming during the day, and then in shorts and t-shorts when out, although you might want long trousers and a sweat or fleece for the evening. Come Christmas it is often very cold, and you can get a frost overnight.
So I would recommend layers (that great British standby!) a lightweight coat, scarves, hat and gloves and warm socks (very important!) in case it is chilly.

If it does get too cold and you haven't taken the right clothing there are loads of shops, malls and outlets to visit...we always travel light outbound:D:D:D

We have only ever had cardigans or a fleece with long trousers. Shorts and tee shirts mainly. Never had to wear hat, gloves and a scarf. Yet we have seen plenty of people walking around with these on.
I can't imagine ever wearing hat, gloves and scarves in Florida, we live in Scotland and only rarely need them here[:I]
We found our first New Year bitterly cold but couldn't buy gloves etc although the Disney parks are now selling them we noticed last time. Between Christmas and New Year the parks are open till 12/1 o clock and if you are waiting around for a parade or fireworks it can get really chilly.
Can be very cold. It went below freezing a few Dec/Jan nights last year. It is nice in the day but drops twenty degrees when the sun goes down and quickly. Take a warm jacket or fleece and wear layers. Put the jacket in a backpack in a locker if you can. Also be careful about getting wet on the water rides. Do them early to give time to dry out and dont wear denim which never dries, otherwise you will just freeze in the evening. A lot of places also feel too air conned in Winter, a warm cardy or sweater wil stand you in good stead even when just going out to eat.
When we went we had frost overnight so had to s****e the car in the morning but by midday it was bikinis by the pool, as it was mid 70s. At least in December you need warm clothing to travel to the airport at home, so you dont need to pack anything extra!
Yes I can back up what Julie says - it went below freezing for about 4-5 nights between January 8 - 22 2003. During the day the sun shone and was pleasantly warm, but the nights turned unexpectedly cold.
I too would recommend trousers, fleece/sweat and light weight jacket too. However, as Sarah has suggested, pack light and shop - there are so many bargains to be had its a shame not to make the most of the opportunity!
Yes it might have been cold last year but surely it cant be nothing compared to over here in England, there in Florida its probably still hot during the day, over here all it does is rain all day long and you get stuck in Jackets. Yes it might get a bit cold at times but im sure it will be warm during the day time.

Last year it was real cold all the way down the East coast.....we had 6 foot of snow that lasted for weeks on end up here....
We've always had nice weather Christmas time..which is the only time we really go to FL......we had one cold night one year.....and one cold morning the next.....we always carry a fleece if we're going anywhere near water in winter....and if we're staying late or leaving early for the parks...it makes me laugh seeing the people who live there wearing fur coats in Disney in the evenings.....and we're still in t-shirts.....hehehehehhee

We went to Florida for Christmas 2 years ago and whilst we could sit by the pool and wear shorts and tee shirts during the day, at night time we certianly were grateful for the long trousers and jumpers we had packed.
The temps during the day were early 70's, but at night it was down to the late 40's early 50's - so not as cold as the UK but enough of a chill in the air to warrent a jumper.

I remember the news reports on the TV in January this year doing a special feature on frost and how to deal with it on your car! The were just waiting for a car crash to happen in those treachorous conditions!
I usually wear shorts all the time and maybe put a fleece on to keep warm later on. If we have been back to the villa I will maybe put trousers on before going out for our meal, but I am on holiday so prefer shorts. Comparing the weather to the Highlands, it is tropical!!
New Year's Eve 2001 was freezing. I had on my leather jacket(with sheepskin lining) gloves and scarf-must have looked a right sight-but it really was that cold.
Be prepared-just in case!
Just for the record I have had my house heating on since last Wednesday-not continually-but nevertheless I am not a very warm blooded individual!
It costs up to $270+ a month to keep warmish up here in the winter time....and thats having the heating off all night no matter how cold it is......and having it on only when need be in the day....in England I could heat my house all winter for that 24/7......:(Quote:

Chrizzy, would it not be cheaper to have your heatin on low all the time? I have heard from other people in the UK that this can be so. My husband easily gets hot, so we have the heating on low during the day for me in the winter, but of at night.
I tried that.....but it doubles the price.......its hot air heating...so it comes on every few mins......to have it on low all day and night would cost about $400+ a month....I've tried all ways......:(.....the only thing to do is get used to the cold......Quote:

Try living in Alaska, we get 6 months of winter! in jan-feb the norm is -20F with an occasional -45F, course it can be balmy like last year, hardly got below -10 with an average daytime (if 5 hours of weak sunlight is a day)temp of 15 above, must be global warming!

I used to race them back in the UK....on wheels cus we had no snow......:D
Daniel thanks but I think we'll give Alaska a miss - sounds much toooooo cold! I get SAD from winter in the UK, so goodness knows how, or if, I would survive in Alaska.
Is anyone getting brrrrrrrrr cold from this topic now how do you get from sunshine to cold although I think everyone over exagerates a bit about where they live
I live in rainy wet Manchester and I am always complaining about how wettttttttt this place is even though we have just come from quite a nice summer still you only remember the rain:(
