Good news if you're looking to exchange your sterling. £1=$1.82 today. Best since September 2005.
I suppose tourist rate should be around £1.77 or so.

Shhh, don't tell Mum. She only got 1.69 last week... [msncry]
Great news, I have money to change.
Noticed in Thomas Cook's today the exchange rate was £1.72, looks like its worth shopping around for.
*watches aussie dollar plummet further*
If anyone wants a great exchange rater for a pound, then visit Oz.
Anyone that comes over here, is delighted at the value for money they get here, as a result of the stength of the sterling!
They can't get through their holiday money, it lasts and lasts.
Does the rate vary from bank to bank etc,we have been watching it for a few months and not sure whether to change up now or wait a few weeks to see if it improves even more
Travelex is $1.7526 but the $ has gone up about 2 cents more today so I expect tomorrow it will be close to $1.77.[msnsmile2] Could be time to buy some[msnwink]
Hoping to pull over 1.8 from our broker but we are waiting as it is on the way up but of course the markets are shut now. As the dollar is falling against the Euro at the mo nobody wants to buy dollars so it is good news for us Brits. We have a whack to change but we want to wait and see what happens. Hope it goes back to 1.9!

I'm getting over $1.80 transferring money across my Citibank accounts and, of course, no charges whatsoever.
Incidentally CDV, being internationally traded, currency markets never 'shut' and you can trade 24/7, 365 days of the year.
Great news, long may it continue to rise.[msnsmile2]
For a better rate try oneo f the commercial brokers Currencies Direct is the one I use
Also for very small amounts Marks&Spencers are very competetive .
We've found The Post Office are worth keeping a check on they are often very competitive and don't charge commission.
Pam & Jeanette
I agree. I use my Citibank accounts to change money too and it works brilliantly giving you great rates and no charges[clap][clap][clap]

What I am trying to say here Phil is that our Broker is closed over the weekend so we work on Fridays rate til then.
I am still going to wait out as we have a large sum to deposit and a couple of cents difference can be hundreds of dollars.
Out of curiousity with Citibank is there a minimun amount you have to transfer?
Marks and Spencer offer a better rate than the post office, although I think you are limited as to how much you can take out at one time, correct me if I'm wrong.
I have just looked at Marks and Spencers website and the rate is
$1.763.
Hi Jackie,
Just checked the post office rate and today their rate is 1.7248.

However your property has just decreased in value against Sterling! I want it to drop to £1 = $1 just when I decide to sell!!

I have used Citibank for years and there is no minimum amount to transfer - either way. Current rate is just over 1.80 for on-line transfer. If you want to transfer really large amounts - for house purchase - you can phone them and get a marginally better rate sometimes.
Thanks Robert for the info on Citibank thats's interesting as obviously a broker has a minimum amount to transfer as they have to make on it, so although there is no charge as such they make and when you are transferring thousands it makes a h*elluva difference.
I need to exchange money as well and was suprised to see it at nearly 1.8 again. I am in no rush so will change it next week when they start trading again
Me too Dom, I will see what develops this week before making my move.
Dave
I think there will be a few of us in this boat:D
Sitting tight too CDV, so move over and make some room.[msnsmile2] We use FX Currency who do the currency for M&S thay charge us £12.50 a transaction no limit. Its what the bank in Florida charge to take it that annoys me!!
Norma.
I am looking with interest as like I said earlier in the week, IRAN -US thing is making the US dollar very week due to uncertainty with oil.
M and S are offering 1.76 this morning as the tourist rate!!!!
......my next guest has just informed me[msnwink][msnwink]

I think it's more closely linked to recent announcements by the Federal Reserve that they will hold interest rates and see how the US economy fares over the next few months. Whatever the reason, it's heading in the right direction for me.
Just checked my bank statement and I got 1.73 2 weeks ago in New York so quite pleased with that[msnwink]
Just checked the M & S Site 1.78 at the tourist rate this morning - if it gets to 1.80 think I will have to buy.[msnwink]
Just to let everyone know I sent some money across today and got 1.82
Its a shame we all haven't got crystal balls !
M&S at 1.78 today.[msnsmile2]
Well worth knowing. Sent the wife to change some for our visit in June with the rate at 1.83 and she was offered 1.70 !
Needless to say I still have the streling in my pocket and will definately try M&S.

1.70!! In the travel agents in town it was 1.76 - so you where right to refuse 1.70 - every bit helps [msnwink]
Anthony - just a thought - have you considered Travelx - they to are offering 1.78?
Diane.
Currencies direct are offering $182.09 today at 4 pm
Touching $1.86 now, Travelex $1.792.
M&S yesterday were selling travellers cheques $1.785
Do Currencies direct charge commission?
Vicky,
Found this on their website.
There is no charge on transfers over £5,000. For transfer less than £5,000 there is a £15 charge.
Hope that answers your question.
Got some Dollars today from M & S at 1.797 - good deal I though. But then got caught by my collegue at work sniffing them........the smell just reminds me of America.........[msnembarrased]
