Hi
Does anyone out there know what the gluten free food is like on the virgin flights. I am booked to go in August and I have celiac disease which means no gluten or wheat in the food. I have already booked a meal but would like to know if anyone has eaten the meals and what they think. Many thanks. Please dm me if there are any celiacs out there.

I am not meant to eat wheat and used to ask for wheat free meals, and got the most tasteless pap imagineable. Now I take some salad and fruit on with me and just get the meal that is not pasta and don't eat any bread. However mine is just for IBS so one day of bad food I can put up with, it is more difficult for you.
Virgin are usually good at providing a gluten free meal. Over the number of years we have travelled with them the meal has always been Salmon, a gluten free roll and there is always strawberries for either starter or dessert. You never get the chocolate with your coffee either!
Hubby is a coeliac and doesn't like fish so it's not great for him but so far Virgin are the only ones that have ever delivered the gluten free meal consistently.
As a coeliac with a coeliac 11 year old son , we have tried a few gluten free airline meals , but never Virgin. They are quite varied in quality - some really [msntongue] and some[xx(] .
My advice would be to always take some food of your own. You never know whether that meal is loaded on the plane until its too late!
If you take fresh stuff and you don't eat it , you will have to dispose of it before you reach customs - best thing is to leave it on the plane as there are no bins.
If its sealed stuff, I have always declared it as I take a range of food with me anyway such as pizza bases and gluten free flour to make rolls. I have had no problem getting the food in though.
You must vist the Outback steakhouse while you are out there. They have the best gluten free chociolate dessert ever. Its based on a GF chocolate brownie. Visit their website for a downloadable GF menuu.

I haven't had a gluten free with Virgin but I have a diabetic meal and its a hundred times tastier than the standard meal my Hubby gets served up.

We can cater for the following meal types:
Diabetic - low in sugar and fat, but high in fibre
Gluten free - contains no foods with barley, wheat, rye or oats. Milk and milk products are also avoided where possible. Suitable for passengers with coeliac disease.
Kosher - all foods are prepared and served according to strict Jewish dietary laws.
Lacto vegetarian - contains no meat, meat products, fish or fowl, but may contain dairy products and eggs. All cheeses provided as part of this meal are vegetarian based.
Vegan vegetarian - contains no meat, meat products, fish, fowl, eggs or dairy products.
Low fat/cholesterol - low fat foods prepared using low fat cooking methods or containing a minimum of added fats.
Low sodium/salt - contains freshly prepared produce with no salt added during preparation.
Muslim - contains no pork, alcohol or derivatives of these products.

Jain meal - only available on flights between London and Delhi/Mumbai. A strict vegan meal which includes no root vegetables.
Asian Vegetarian Meal - only available on flights between London and Delhi/Mumbai. This meal is vegetarian and will be of a spicy nature.

I have ordered the gluten free meal and checked with the travel agent and they have said its been ordered but as has been said they may not be any on board.Liked the advice about the sealed pizza bases and the flour as I love pancakes and im so disappointed I cant go to ihops but I will get my hubby to make them whilst I am relaxing by the pool with tia marie and coke.............I am a slave driver.........mind you the whole family love the pancakes.
The outback steakhouse I am definitely going to look out for that.

Ask when you check in to make sure your meal is on board, and again once on board asap before the doors are closed[msnsmile2]

I have had IBS since I was 14, you need low fibre, and no beans, sweetcorn or onions!![msnscared]

Lucy I had acute diverticulitis in the upper mexoids a few years ago (I think that is what he called it!) and the surgeon told me to stick to a wheat free diet and lots of fibre. I passed out on the A&E floor after passing blood for 4 hours a few weeks after being diagnosed with IBS having had a barrage of tests. Came to about 3 hours later to find my husband ashen faced beside me and I was hooked up to drips, transfusions and monitors everywhere. They kept me in a week debating whether to remove yards of colon and decided not to in the end.
There was a time when broccoli or cauliflower used to set me off but this is ok now. Bread can definately be a problem so I have rye bread or make bread in the breadmaker. Pasta is very odd, M&S ordinary pasta is ok for me but the cheap brands definately set off the pains. If I live on a diet of protein and salad / veg and loads of fruit I feel fine. I am trying to have organic meat and veg since being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Fiona, IBS is so wierd isn't it?? Im ok on Sainsburys own fresh baked wholemeal bread and pasta is not bad not that I eat much anyway, but sweetcorn, baked beans, brocoli, cauliflower, home made veg soup, Oh nightmare, but I like you live on porridge for breakfast, protien, salad, some veg for lunches and teas, oatcakes and yogurt for snacks,but loads of fruits[msnwink]

You can get gluten free waffles in Chamberlians and I found them in a Publix too.[msnsmile]
