Cell Phone Update.
I asked a question about Cell Phones recently a few weeks before my trip to Orlando and having since returned i thought i would post an update about the phone i purchased.
I bought a pay as you go TracFone(Nokia)for $39.99 which are sold at quite a few places.
After calling a free phone number you are taken through the process of activating your phone and receiving your own number.
This can also be done online by visiting their website.
The phone itself remains yours but to keep the service active you need to purchase a new Airtime card before the expiry date which is 60 days since you last purchased airtime.
Even if your phone gets deactivated it can easily be reactivated at a later date just by purchasing a new airtime card and calling the free phone number again so you can get a new number and reactivate it and if this is done within 60 days of the last deactivation any unused airtime will be added to the new units.
Airtime minutes can be purchased at loads of places such as Target,Walgreens, Walmarts and many others and come amounts of 40 ($19.99),100,200 and 400 minutes.
When you buy a card you will receive a serial number which you will need when you call the TracFone free phone number (1-800 867 7183)to add your additional minutes.
This number is either on the back of the card which you will find when you scratch off the gray strip otherwise you will need to keep the shop receipt that will show the number at the top,in this case the actual card is of no use so be sure to keep the receipt or you will not be able to redeem your new minutes.
A local call costs 1 unit for 1 minute and one minute of 'Roaming' time (non local) costs 2 units.
A text message costs Half a unit.

are these ideal for calling each other in the US if say 2 families have gone together but parted for different days out??????
-
Yes Liesa thats exactly why i got one.
One my last trip just a couple of weeks ago i wanted a phone simply because i was visiting my friend who lives there and though we would spend most of the time together there were 2 days we could not see each other because of a wedding she had to go to in cocoa beach and one day she could not get off work so i got my phone and it was great for keeping in touch where ever we both were.
So yes they are great for keeping in touch and if you can get the special deal they have at the moment for only $29.99 that would be fantastic value.

It's also ideal if you're out closing or working on your house and need to make lots of calls to suppliers / builders etc.
We got a neat motorola for $69 when we were out over Easter. Just to add as well that if you buy extra minutes before the old ones expire they extend the 60 days. You cqan also buy a 200 minute card and get a years activation - in case you forget the expiry date.

We've had a Tracfone for about three years now, sometimes we let our minutes run out but this year we've done the 12 months thing to keep the same number. After the slippers(!), it's the first thing out of our owners' closet so we can charge up the battery again!

We bought a Virgin Mobile last June, Top up $20 every 90days, leave it for 90 days and top up again.
We buy our top ups through Ebay and top up on line!
Easy Peasy
Its kinda neat having a US mobile even though they are no way as upto date as ours here in the UK!
