It's hardly relevant as it's so much cheaper than the UK anyway! It's around $1.78 - $1.89 per gallon at the moment.
It costs around $20 to fill up our Intermediate size rental car.
we paid the alamo company $39 on the credit card when we got the bill it was £21 and that was for Dodge super caravan and this was Dec 1st -15th 04
Liesa, that's when you take the no petrol included rental option. Rental companies always charge a high premium for providing a tank of fuel and this doesn't reflect the price that you'd pay yourself at the pump.
Though Blott, not a bad price to pay for all that time and no hassle. You must be like me sqeezing pennies and hunt down the cheapest fuel out there..[msnwink]
well we thought that for a full tank wasnt bad at all.......
This site will keep you up to date for Orlando.
http://www.orlandogasprices.com/
You can replace the city name to check other cities or the site has some query capabilities.
Especially since my saab used to take £50 worth a tank, and that used to last me a week [msnoo][msnoo]
That's not bad at all - from memory, last time we had a 7 seater in June, we used to pay something like $25 or slightly more to fill it up at a normal gas station and the gas prices have increased quite a bit since then.

well we didnt think that was bad! we did over 1900 miles cos we kept getting lost, , do that here!!!!never!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When we were in the states in August this year, we heard some locals moaning about the cost of fuel, whilst we were queueing at a local supermarket checkout. When Ray told them the cost of a gallon of petrol over here they thought he was joking. When they realised he was serious they decided maybe they were not as bad off as they had thought.[msnsmile2]
They really couldn't beleive we actually pay what we do!!!

It usually costs me about $40 to fill up my minivan. Obviously, John, you don't wait for that low fuel light to come on! ;)
Filled up yesterday... $1.88 per gallon
so lucky........
We laugh at the petrol price, we take the Gold option which includes the Petrol and extra cover etc.
When you think of the price here, its a joke!!
Less than a quid a gallon in the US!!
The govt here should be [gun][gun][gun][gun][gun][gun][gun][gun]
my thoughts to... but i use diesal it used to be cheap here but not anymore, very close to petrol!
Mind you when you think about it, they do have other things that are really expensive, like their medical care, although we all moan about the NHS I for one wouldn't want to be paying the kind of medical insurance they have to in the US, so its all swings and roundabouts really.[msnsmile]
yes quite right!!!!!! wouldve hated to have got ill there!!!!
Well that should not really be a problem, Liesa, if you are adequately insured for your holiday - it really is a priority to get a good insurance with plenty of cover, and we always pay the very small amount extra so that we have no excess to pay if we should need a visit to a Dr or hospital. Having been taken very ill in Orlando just over a year ago I cannot fault the wonderful care that I received, and we were certainly glad that we paid out for good medical insurance as it did not cost us a penny - though it was thousands of dollars!
Whilst nobody wants or expects to need medical care on holiday, in the USA it is absolutely vital to be properly covered.
having high blood pressure, arthritis in my knee and hip i too took out proper insurance! but still wouldnt have liked to get ill over there or anywhere come to think of it!
I drove through Georgia over the weekend. Saw gas at $1.50 a gallon!
For all home owners here, looks like Florida home insurance premiums are taking a 20% hike in 2005.
Doh, lousy hurricanes!
Petrol was $1.75 in Disney last week - the cheapest we found. Prices varied quite a bit - one gas station on the 192 was charging $1.99 whilst others were charging nearer to $1.78, near to our home.

With the cuurent exchange rates, even if you consider this as £1 for a 4-litre US Gallon, it is still a lot cheaper than the £3.20 to £3.40 we fork out for 4-litres in the UK.
Yes, Nostromo, its fantastic value, isn't it? We did over 1500 miles and it cost us next to nothing, despite even the smaller cars being gas guzzlers.
Was a bit of a shock coming back here!:)

I always thought that one got better MPG with like-for-like cars in the USA compared with Europe. Maybe something to do with straighter roads and increased use of cruise control.
If you look at mpg on the car hire sites an economy is 26mpg, a compact is 28 mpg and an intermediate 27mpg. Think our cars are very much more economical in the UK as economy simply is not a factor in the US - size and comfort is! Look at all the huge 4x4's and minivans etc that are on the road now in the US. Am sure that most of us would not be happy with a small car averaging 26mpg in the UK!
We expect our cars in the UK to be economical - it's too expensive otherwise -unless you can afford the luxury class, BMW's and Mercs, in which case it really doesnt matter!;) For us lesser mortals economy IS a factor - that's why its so nice to hire a big comfortable car in the US and not have to worry about the cost of petrol!:)
Remember that the US Gallon is quite a bit less than an Imperial Gallon. This makes the US figures look a little on the low side perhaps.
Yes, you are right, of course, a US gallon is approx 3.79 litres, whilst a UK gallon is about 4.546 litres, so a US gallon is 0.833 of a British Imperial Gallon, and a UK gallon is about 16.6% more than a US gallon.
But I think that most of us like to forget that, and just revel in the lower price!

You could have a point there Ellie!!
BUT
Even with the extra, .79l you would need in the US to make it up to our own UK Gallon, Petrol is still only £1.20 in the US!!
And thats a UK Gallon!!
So UK petrol Prices are still more than 3 times more than that of the USA!!
Yeah but health care will cost minimum of $700 a month (and you still have pay something towards yor treatment)for good policy covering a family of four. Swings and roundabouts.

Thats providing you take Health Care cover that is!!
I am sure that not every American has it, even though at some point in their life they may need it!!
I think by the time you take into consideration our NI Contributions and Our Employers NI Contributions, we will not be that far behind them!!
We also have the option of Private medical treatment!!
The NHS is stretched to the limit at the minute and has been for some years!!
But we do take on board your comments!!
I don't think all the taxes we pay on Fuel in the UK go to fund the NHS. Although SOME may get there in the end!!
Well, whatever the figures, and whether or not its UK gallons or US gallons, pounds stirling or dollars, most of us like to think we are getting a bargain, and petrol in the US certainly is that - for British tourists anyway! I am sure we are not the only ones to get a real kick out of filling up our tanks for less than $20,so,long may we enjoy it.[msnwink]
Not only that, but it makes it possible to enjoy the comfort and luxury of some of the larger American vehicles without worrying too much about how much the petrol is costing.
We arrived very late at night, after midnight, at the Alamo collection point in Orlando last year only to find that they had very few cars left, and none in our class. So they said 'take what you want' and we ended up, to my son's joy, with a lovely comfortable 4 x 4 for the same cost as a Compact. This, added to the low cost of petrol made our day!
Mind you, we did have trouble trying to persuade our son that he could not take the 4 x 4 home with him![msneek]
Ellie
Thanks must have been a great start to your Holiday!!
I can just imagine you trying to explain that you have to give it up before you return home!!
Too true, Andy and Diane, and he's not a toddler either - a hulking great 6ft 16 year old now!;)
:D

I agree wholeheartedly. Driving in the US (LA excluded [xx(]) is less stressful and more enjoyable than in the UK. I have done over 400 miles in a day without too much of a bother on the US while the 80-mile trip from my house to London along the M4 gives me the heebie-jeebies.
know the feeling!!!!:)
It might well be that equivalent US cars are a little more thirsty than the UK ones because they are virtually all automatics. I drive an automatic car here and the mpg is around 10-15% less than the manual version. Even so, as everybody has observed, US petrol is still very cheap by comparison and the driving experience seems so much more pleasant.
I certainly wish I was bowling along the Florida Turnpike, in a comfortable 7 seater minivan, on my way from Miami to our villa, Katy's Grandad!
I have to admit to having only driven around our community, and never having attempted to drive on 'real' roads, despite our numerous trips! What a wimp, eh?
Not only that, but my 19 year old daughter went to work for a year in Miami and after being a VERY nervous driver on British roads, took to driving on the wrong side of the road like a duck to water - despite the manic traffic conditions down there! It has to be seen to be believed - one hand holding their cell phone, the other doing their make-up, or eating a McDonalds!!! Aaargghh! Puts me to shame, I can tell you!
Ah well, Katy's Grandad, perhaps that is the bonus of having youth on your side!
[msnwink]
wish i had the nerve to try driving around the villa we stayed at, Russ did and loved it, but am very afraid!!![msnwink]
Well I,m going to brave it and do a bit of driving when Ray & I are in Florida in February. No sons to heckle from the back seats, so will give it a go. Probably just around the community to start and see how it goes, never having driven an automatic before it should be a real experience.[msnoo]:D
