I think I've missed the boat on good exchange rates; best yesterday was 1.763. Not sure if I should buy straight away or wait a few days (we travel in 3 weeks .... yahoo :)).

I dont know about missed the boat, $1.76 is very good for a tourist rate, the bussiness rate was not that much higher the other week.
I would buy now.
It is far greater than the $1.35 we where getting at the start of last year.
the dollar is up and down lately dawson and sandersons rate is 178.25
today marks and spencer is just about the same but with 3 weeks to go you should have time to get a good rate
:D:D:D:D:D:D
I Agree with Amy. Susan $1.76 is a great rate and the difference between this and say anything over $1.80 is really not worth worrying about unless you plan to spend thousands.:D
Hi Susan,
I have just checked on Mark and Spencers website and there exchange rate is 1.785 and you can order online. Hope this is of some help.

I've had a look at the 'Financial Forecast Center' web site.
I don't know much about the finance world nor how the market forecasts things like this but the prediction for the U.S. Dollars per British Pound Currency Exchange Rate is:
Aug 1.86
Sept 1.55
Oct 2.22
Nov 2.32
Dec 2.41
...anyone any thoughts about this ?
wow show me the money and put my builder off til x mas!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D

This has been said many times. The best brains in the financial centres of the world, with access to every possible piece of data, try to estimate which way exchange rates will go. They gamble millions on the £/$ rate changing by a fraction of a cent. They often get it wrong as rates are affected by unforseen and unforcastable events - war/terrorism etc.
It sounds like the artificial inteligence used in that computer model has had a malfunction to forecast the £/$ exchange rate to drop by 20% between Aug and Sept and then rise by 50% between Sep and Oct.
Now if I could depend upon it!!!
Will be out in October and if those forecasts are right the old credit card will definately get a good hammering :D:D

$2.41[?][msntongue] In December[?] Blimey If that turns out to be correct I will eat my hat:DIts a nice one too[msntongue]
wow, if that's the case, i'm going to sell in September, change my money up in October and buy again in December - Will make a killing!
If that happens my November/December three weeks are going to be even more shoptastic than normal...
Seeing as last December I think I got $1.65 to the GBP then I think I'm owed a good rate :D
Already got half the spending money though as $1.80 was a great rate a few weeks back.

i have bought some dollars in anticipation of a november holiday just in case the rate drops.[8D]
If the rate hits anything over two to the pound, not to mention 2.41 ish, i will be spending a fortune. Will have a house in florida sooner rather than later.
I cant see it happening though. But we can keep our fingers crossed.
£/$ at 12 month high today - $1.915. Is this good or bad news for villa owners? I suppose it's very good news for somebody looking to buy property about now.
Right time to hit Premium Outlets, Walmart and others tomorrow with credit card....get more for my allowance :)

I just transferred some £££'s to our US account via our on line broker and got 1.88 dollars to the pound :D:D:D

Go on Dan. With the exchange rate being what it is (and going to be) you can always buy another hat.[clap][clap][lucky][lucky]
I bought some Travellers Cheques from M & S on Saturday at $1.837 thought this was excellent - have never had a rate anywhere like this in all the time we have been going(starting 93)
just think how were smiling having closed today[beer][beer][beer][beer][clap][clap][clap][clap][clap][clap][clap][clap][clap][clap]
My Nationwide cards are looking more nervous by the minute! :D
Have you seen the exchange rate today!!!
10 year high - $1.934. I remember it touching $2 very briefly in 1992 when I was in California. I didn't think I would see this sort of level again. Is this all good news for you lucky people who own property in Florida?
I am seriously considering paying the rental in full now for my next trip in April.

Just the opposite - if it is that high when you eventually sell and return money to UK.
I hope this trend holds out for some time. I am going to the US in May-June 2005 and have a lot of places to visit. This sort of exchange rate will save me a lot of quid.
Got to say I am tempted we don't go till July next year, i am going to try and resist a bit longer! they say it will go up a bit more, the post office has got it on at £1.85... for travellers cheques.
I used Travelex Online for my Dollars as they give the best rate i have found and you can pick them up at most UK Airports. Their current rate is $1.8745/£ which as i see is about 2cents better than anywhere else. They even give you a buy back guarantee so in situations like the moment where the pound is getting stronger when you want to change your dollars back it is done at the Exchange rate you bought them at! :D
On Forex it has just broken the $1.94 mark and is still rising. On Sky news earlier they were saying if it does break the $2 barrier it could well go to $2.15 - £2.20. If it does I might buy a few.
got 1.93 from xe[msncool]
Hi Susan,
I bought Tuesday of this week from Lloyds and bought at $1.83.

You should try a broker next time, this week you should be getting at least 1.9. When the rate was 1.85 we got 1.83 from our broker.
Yep...with a broker you will get a commercial rate, not the regular tourist rate.
Every penny counts in this game expecially if you are buying a villa!!
The rewards can make quite a difference!!
But obviously it has the opposite effect if you are changing your money the other way around!!
From $ to £
[msncry]
Hopefully we won't have to do that for quite a while!
Yes, it will be a bit painful if you need to convert from $ back to £ at the moment....
I was talking to an owner of a camera shop on i drive 3 weeks ago and he stated that his accountant had advised him to buy as much sterling as he could afford as the exchange rate will reach $2.40 by April 2005. Judging by the current exchange rate rise this may well be a true statement.

Wow! I'm going in May and any rate above $2 will be great news. In fact, I've only paid a 10% deposit on all hotel bookings and the rest is due to be settled at the time of checkout. The exchange rate situation should suit me fine, then. [beer][beer]
Which online broker do you use

My wife and I are members of Wexas, which a lot of professional people seem to do. Members get discount flights, hotels and car hire. Hotel deals are usually the best with Wexas.
But I hasten to add that they are NOT as good as OV for visits to Orlando / Central Florida and in any case, Wexas do not do villas.
No disrespect to the camera shops owner's accountant but the March 2005 £/$ futures contract is quoting $1943 today so it seems the market doesn't see $2.40 in April. As an active trader in currencies my advice would be to wary of "a mate of a mate's" advice. Beyond that point I have learnt from bitter experience not to give financial advice unless you want to lose every friend you've got!
Drew out cash in Florida yesterday with my Nationwide card (no charges for drawing foreign currency) and got a rate of $1.92.
