Our son visited Coconut Grove a few times whilst studying at University of Miami, just up the road at Coral Gables. He says it is a nice area to visit and fairly safe to walk round. It has a bustling nightlife as it is much cheaper than South Beach, so be prepared for students. The main shopping centre and mall is called City Walk and there are also some other parades of shops. As a marine biology student he spent more time going out from the marina than the beach but he says the marina is definitely a place to drool at the yachts!
Access to the area is also good. Coconut Grove is easily accessible from US1 and I95. If you do not want to drive everywhere (he did not have a car) there are a couple of bus routes that serve Coconut Grove, including a bus that goes from the Marina to the Metro. The Metro covers a distance of approximately 21 miles and is $1.25 to travel the length or $1 if you have a book of 10 tickets for $10. If you need to change onto another bus or the metro to complete your journey you buy a transfer ticket for 25 cents.
He also recommends a visit to the local http://www.floridastateparks.org/the...le/default.cfm State Park in Coconut Grove. There are several of these in the area one of my favourites being Bill Baggs on Key Biscayne. I hope this is of some help regarding the area.
