whilst smugly reading the topic on gators not feeling concerned at all, then read one of the threads about spiders!!!!! Not so smug now, terified of spiders. Are they of very large variety and do they come in the villas, surrounding area frequently?

I've only ever been to Florida once before and we only saw one spider the whole time that we were there - in the garage of the villa. I'm no expert, but I was pretty sure it was a Black Widow.

We left her alone! [msnscared]

The villas all have a pest control programme, both inside and out, so you're very unlikely to see one inside unless you leave a door or window open. They usually can't get through the pool deck netting either.

Only time I've seen spiders is around the eaves of the villa and around the pool equipment and they'll usually run from you rather than to you if they're disturbed.

Even Black Widows are surprisingly small and the only large ones I've ever seen have been in zoos and the like.

We had spiders inside because it was a new villa....so the windows and doors had been open for months.......with no screens.......the bug lady sprayed and killed any she came across...... most spiders need to be killed with a contact spray you can buy anywhere and it works in seconds......once a house is cleared....you should only get normal house spiders indoors........just keep the garage door closed ALL THE TIME......it should be the only way they can get into the house....

You will find spiders in new villas....the doors and windows have been open for ages.....make sure your bug man goes into the attic.....thats where my big ones were.....
Spiders really need to be contact spayed to kill them.....so if your bug man found them....they will be dead.......:)

Maybe we've been lucky ~ we are not spider fans either [xx(], but in the 12 years we have been visiting Florida, we have never seen any at all, apart from Animal Kingdom of course ;)

What do Black Widows look like? Will I be able to recongnise it if I find one or do they just look like house spiders?? [:0]

My husband walked into a web at Lake Louisa. The spider was the size of one of our average house spiders. It had a blue bottom - don't know what sort it was.

I see quite a few each time I'm there, usually in trees and bushes and they also like wood. These are white, black and orange - pretty big too. Yikes! [V]

Here's some pics - Black Widow female spiders are not very big (about the size of a large UK house spider) and the males are smaller. As you can see, they also come with different markings although they are both Black Widows.

Personally I hate anything in the least 'buggy' (especially spiders! [:O]) but fortunately haven't managed to encounter much in Florida.

I think you would be very very unlucky to get bite by a spider on holiday.....unlike me you'll not be cleaning webs off the front door for starters........and once the house is sprayed....you just need to keep the garage door closed to the house...and keep the screens closed on the doors.....my mum has a terror of spiders.......and she was fine.....for 6 weeks...

I am terrified of spiders, too. We had a couple of small ones in the house in July, but we just sprayed them. Haven't seen any black widows, although I know they are around. More dangerous, though, than the Black Widow spiders is the Brown Recluse, found all over the US. They can make you very sick if you get a bite.

Kissymee,
We had an armadillo that fell in love with our front garden and contiunally dug a hole there. Our MC put a couple of moth balls down the hole about 12 moths ago and we haven,t seen it since. Racoons hate the smell of moth balls as well.

The second picture was the spider we 'met'. It was very small - but distinctly marked, with the large abdomen.

Did we see a male then?

Really different from what we're used to!

We went canoeing on the weeki watchi river on our last trip. It was great fun apart from when we got stuck in some overhanging trees and a massive spider fell in the boat me and daughter were in. The boys thought it was hilarious us screaming until the same thing happened to them;)We were praying it wasnt going to bite until we managed to find a bank we could get out on half an hour later.[:0]

[/quote]I think the males are much smaller and plain without markings and the large abdomen makes me think it was probably a female.

Blott,

Horrid!

It wasn't very big - you can see the effect it had on me, as it's now 3 years later...

Thing is, I was too scared to kill it, in case I missed and it attacked me [msnscared]

I don't know what it is about spiders, but they scare the hell out of me. Did anyone see celebrity fear factor on sunday night, they had to put MASSIVE spiders into their mouths!!! and keep them there for one and a half minutes, when they could open their mouths and let the spider crawl out[msneek]

It was absolutely gross, because when they had their mouths closed you could still see the spider's legs stick out!!! I am feeling dizzy again just thinking about it[msnsad]
