Can anyone tell me how we stand? In 1996 my partner got caught in a speed trap in a construction zone, whilst travelling from Tampa to Orlando. The $100 fine was doubled to $200.However due to time constraints(good excuse) the fine was never paid. Will this cause any problems entering the US and if so,what can we do about this.

He could be arrested at the airport....so you need to get the fine paid before leaving....if he is arrested he could be deported and not let back into the USA for a long time......

I think if you do a search someone else had this problem.....I don't know myself how you go about paying from the UK....
Its really not worth hoping you'll not get stopped.......

Carrie
There have been a couple of cases on tv recently where people have been stopped from entering because of unpaid fines so really it would be in your interest to try and sort it before you go and get proof of payment.
I have no idea of the legal process in the US whether the fine would have been increased for non payment etc but if he has any original paperwork it would help to trace it.
Of course if he was driving a hire car there is also the possibility that a) they could have paid it to keep their reputation but would guess they would have been in touch or
b) the hire company may still have a recored and refuse to let him have another car if it is the same company.
I'm not trying to scare you but its best to be prepared, good luck sorting it.

Carrie,

You'll probably find that the original $200 fine will have increased since 1996!!....not sure what rate but I had a guest recently enquiring the same as yourself. They found out that it had doubled over their period of time!!
As Chrizzy says he could get arrested so best to pay now and get it sorted.

carrie; even though it was a few years ago it will still be registered as not payed. Try and sought it out before you go ie; car rental where you hired the car from is a start. If not you prob get pick upp at customs and be arrested. And may be deported back. The u. s. are very strick on these things.
Good luck and i hope you will have a nice holiday.

hi guys, just thought i would let you know the results of my speeding ticket enquiry.
my partner acquired a speeding ticket in 96 in florida, and could not remember if he ad paid it or not. and we were worried about going back in october.
i checked withe dvlc in florida and they still had a record of the offence, it was paid but for any one else in a similar position, THEY DO KEEP RECORDS so dont try to get away with it, we were told if we had not paid it we would be stopped at the airport, and they also said the fine would have increased, each year.
i am glad we have sorted it out.

[/quote]People don't normally believe us when we say things like you need to get it sorted out or it will come back to haunt you in the future but you just proved that we're correct and they do keep these records!

Glad you got it sorted and it's now nothing to worry about - all you have to do is enjoy Florida!

I think you should be OK as they rarely worry about just one offence for a few cents.
