Will the region hacks work on US players? I'd like to play UK discs in my living room. The only multi system I have is the one in my Ford Windstar Mini Van!

It depends on what DVD player you have, some are hackable some aren't. Do a Google search for dvd region free hacks for your make and model number, there's also loads of discussion forums like here to help you out.
Failing that buy a cheap hackable player like a CyberHome 500 or just buy a DVD player on EBay which is already hacked.
Just go to ebay.com and search for "region free dvd".
There are always players for sale, often for a little as $50.
Neil
Hacks work on all dvd players, the manufacturers have made them that way so you can easily hack any USA dvd player as well as a UK one
Thers is an excellent site (videohelp.com) which list all known codes for nearly all players. Just search with your make and model and follow the instructions.
New basic DVD player in Circit City $39.

My Sony needs additional components to make it PAL enable....[msnmad]
Guess it's ebay and buy a multi player....[msnsmile]
best to get on the net and put in a search for the hack for your player, mine came up and had no problems doing it on the control, some are more harder though.

I did that and all the sites told me my model 'Sony DVP NS325' needed new components to play PAL DVDs.

This is a little misleading. Some DVD hardware require physical component changes....
As per other posts it depends on the manufacturer..
Look on http://regionhacks.datatestlab.com/
for example!!
Another option for Chipped remotes is at http://www.dvdchips.co.uk/
They do offer a solution from some Sony DVD players!!

From past experience in the UK the cheaper DVD players do not need anything extra other than a code. My Toshiba needed extra parts which had to be fitted by an approved source otherwise the warranty was invalid.
This is generally the rule!!
It appears that the more expensive players have actually engineered region protection into the hardware, whereas the cheaper types (although not necessarily of any worse quality) have the protection held within the software. Their protection can therefore be bypassed by specific key/button sequences on a handset!!

The cheapest Pacific player from Asda (about £35) is multi region.
Just plug it in, straight out of the box and it plays anything!

we have a portable DVD player with screen and tried to use it whilst we were over at our villa. It did not work for the following reasons.
1. American TV's dont seem to have scart leads or ariel leads, they have cable tv adapter leads
2. American TV's have differant TV standards (NTSC, European is PAL)
our dvd player does play american region 1 discs so it could not be this.
