I live in Maidenhead in Berkshire and was born in Tidworth in Hampshire. As an army brat I have lived in Bulford Camp, Malaya (moved every 4 months for 2 years but spent some time in Butterworth and Kuala Lumpur), Ayr, Glasgow, Camberley, Warminster, Germany - Iserlohn and then Rheindahlen, Camberley (still moved house while there!, Inverness, Bulford Camp, Singapore, West Byfleet, Warminster, Portadown and back to Warminster. I then got married (db was born in Cyprus and brought up in Hong Kong) and we have lived in Great Missenden and Maidenhead over the past 26 years. My father was in a scottish battalion and you can see we spent more time on Salisbury Plains or the home counties than in Scotland.

Having been at boarding school in Ascot I look as though I have never moved from Berkshire on my cv!

We live in Swindon Wilts and despite all the mickey taking it's a great place to live. Originally from Stalybridge Chesire we moved here 19 years ago when my children were little. I love my home town dearly and all my family are there but I would never go back.
I often think we would like to relocate to the US but I'm sure it's a case of "the grass being Greener" so for now it's great for hols.[msnsmile2]

No Andy it was the Royal Highland Fusiliers, when the Argylls were being disbanded we got loads of them during the 70's when my father was CO in NI. He originally joined the Highland Light Infantry but it was amalgamated with a lowland regiment in the late 50's. I have the HLI brooch and my sister has the RHF one. We lost one of the lads in Iraq last week and the current CO is one of the boys I used to be friends in Iserlohn, small world.

I think we lived in Rembrandt Strasse in Iserlohn, and in Singapore we were based at Nee Soon Garrison. It was while there was an ANZUK brigade for a while, before all the cuts[msncry].

We are practically neighbours. We are in Pewsey, Wilts. Swindon not all that bad - I do most of my shopping there - and after a hard day slogging round the outlet village for Florida clothes on Thursday I will be enjoying lunch with a friend in Wootton Bassett.

Still wish it was Florida though:(

Well, well, what a small world. I had to laugh at the bad langugwe filter on Skunthorpe (sopelt wrong to avoid it again). I never realised there were so many rude words hidden in innocent words.:D:D

Hiya Mike, I was married in Witney. Jo and Barry you are not too far away from me. I live in Tilehurst, just west of Reading. Angua (love the new avatar) I was born in Norwich but haven't managed to escape from Reading yet.;)

Like Fiona, I was a forces brat but the RAF this time. Born in Norwich, moved to Holland, Germany (Moenchengladbach), Yorkshire- near Ripon then near Thirsk,
Hastings (various times due to unaccompanied postings), Witney, then with hubby in the RAF we did Bristol, Wittering, Germany again where the son was born, Conningsby (hated it there), Ascot, Wokingham and finally Reading. I must sday I do miss the moving about.

Is Wittering base still there Porky? Used to live at Stamford and enjoyed the Harrier parked outside the entrance but not the low flying exercises!

porky
07-07-2004, 18:33
As far as I am aware Blott, Wittering is still there. I worked in Stamford and used to travel there and back on my trusty Honda 90. I nearly had several accidents on the A1 due to low flying Harriers - first time I hadn't noticed one coming in to land and as it passed over my head I nearly fell off my bike in fright.:D Another time I was too busy watching them on the end of the runway that I nearly went into a ditch on the side of the road[:I] and the last time I nearly went up the back of some fool who slammed on his brakes to watch one land[msncry]

They are my hubby's favourite aircratf but I much prefer the older and much noisier Lightning[:p][:p][:p]What a noise and what a performance. One day I shall have saved up enough money to go for a fly in one over in South Africa. Hubby says I wouldn't be able to do it as I can't stand the Hulk:D I wonder if I can persuade him to make a bet with me. If I go on those awful rides by the Old Town, he has to pay for my flight.:D:D Somehow I think he will be keeping hold of his money.[msnscared][msnscared]

Whenever you speak to an American, they seem to think that the whole country is just north of London.

We were talking to a couple of coaster mad US seniors in IOA one year and their dream was to travel to London and visit Alton Towers for Nemesis.

We were also talking to a guy this year, who, after finding out that we were from the UK told us that he knew someone who lived in London, with that "you might know him" sort of look on his face.

We did eventually find a waiter in Romano's Macaroni Grill who had family in Chester.

It is lovely here in dorset isnt it, i have just taken my mad collie for a walk accross the Fleet which is about 5 mins from my house and she wouldnt come out of the sea, mind you on a rainy day there can be nothing worse.

But I do feel an affinity with most of the places posted. I have lived in nearly as many places as Fiona posted. Born in Glasgow then lived in Egypt, Catterick, Glasgow, Cheltenham, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Aldershot, Munster (Germany), Warminster, Tidworth, Blackpool and then London (Central, N, S, E, & W) and now here in Romford, Essex.

Very close; he was; (Egypt, Catterick) I was; Aldershot, Munster, Tidworth, Warminster, Central London. And pongo!!! cheek!! I use the term squaddie, for me at least (tongue in cheek) My Dad would be most offended. But does that mean you were either an erk or a matelot, they are the ones normally to use the term pongo.

Anyway thanks for the reply at least someone reads my posts.<blockquote id="quote" class="ffs">quote:Originally posted by porky

Hi Erik, I missed the Aldershot bit, that would have given the game away. Both my mum and dad were RAF as was my hubby. It was my dad that used to refer to the squaddies as pongos and the name just stuck. Made some good friends with them when hubby and I were posted to Germany as we were all living in the same block in a German village - used to have some good inter forces drinking competitions.:D:D:D

Hi again Jacqui,

Yes those were the days in Germany. I was there in the 60's (that gives the game away) as a single squaddie so it was a little different, apart from the drinking, that never changes in service life.

All the best, I'm sure we will speak again.

Erik

Hiya All

We live in sunny ( well it is at the moment) Leigh in Greater Manchester. No we don't eat pies all the time, and it's a long time since clogs and shawls, whippets etc..
We do still have streets like on Coronation St, but I think we only have one lot of cobbles now.

I'm really proud of our heritage , and I talk just like Peter Kay - in fact I'm sure his observations are based on my life and family.

If you've never heard of Leigh our most recent claim to fame was winning the RLFC cup at Wembley against Leeds in 1971 ! Other things have happened since then honest, our present teams(we have several successful ones) are doing reasonably well and our football team Leigh RMI are doing well also.

It's still sunshining even after all that .. see it doesn't always rain in Manchester..

We live in Billericay in Essex.

For all you american owners out there Billericay's biggest claim to fame is being home to 2 of the original Pilgrim Fathers who set sail on the Mayflower. Can't remember their names but we have a High School called The Mayflower and several pubs.
