Everyone in the UK was devastated by the events of that dreadful day but we homeowners have such close ties with America that we felt acutely the outpouring of grief from our friends across the Atlantic and shared with them in their sorrow. I have never received so many emails, from friends and neigbours in America but also from people I barely knew, from past US guests and agents with whom I had hardly had contact. They said thank you for grieving with the American nation and for our support in the war which followed. We had the stars and stripes in our front window for a fortnight. I remember standing in Tescos during the silent moments of remembrance with my basket in hand burying my face among the cans of beans because the tears were rolling down my cheeks. They have started rolling again now as I am writing this one year on...
