I think the answer to that one is that you have little or no chance Caz.
My brother in law has been in the states for about 8 years now and he and his partner are both employed by American companies. They both have green cards now (for about the past 2 years)but at one time it looked as if the only thing that would keep them there was the fact that their children were born there and were therefore American Citizens. Strangely enough the children will have difficulty getting British Passports even though their parents both have them. My sister in law is Britsh by Naturalization ie;she was born outside the UK(Nigeria) to British parents, but naturalization can only be passed down one generation. My brother in law is British but as they are not married the British Passport Office will not recognize him as their father!!! [msneek]
There are a lot of very experienced people on this forum who may be able to give you information about visas but I think your chance of a greencard is slim....you could try marrying an American![msnsmile2]
Sorry the news isn't better.

1. Get an L1 inter company transfer, trade for a year, get renewed and apply for a green card
2..Get sponsorred by a US company for HiB and apply for adjustment of status.
3.Get sponsorred by a family member who is a US citizen on in some cases a green card holder ( can take years, one website talks about a Philipino who sponsorred his brother and it took 21 years to come through!!)
4. Enter the green card lottery if you or your parents were born outside the UK ( Ireland counts !!)
5.Invest $1 million in a US business with at least ten employees or %500,000 in a business in an area of low employment
6.Write a book, make a record, publish papers in a journal, become good at a sport ot something to satisfy the criteria of person of exceptional ability. There is another category of this for highly qualified academics.such as professors and researchers
7. Train to be a nurse and take the conversion course to work in the US.
.
The length of time depends on the category of the application. Currently 2-3 years is common. Family sposnorship can be longer.

Julie
to enter the green card lottery do both of your parents have to be born outside the UK or only 1 of them? My dad was born in Alexandria in Egypt but my mum was born in Newcastle. Would like to know if I qualified.

There are basically SEVEN ways that you can get a visa to live and work in the US:
(1) Marriage (or engagement in anticipation of marriage) to a US citizen.

(2) You have skills that are in short supply in the US e.g. scientific or medical training. A degree is normally a must. Or you have superior specialist skills with at least 12 years experience.

(3) You have an Employer who is willing to transfer you - but even the employer has to make a good case for you - so you have to be a manager unless you fall under category (2) above.

(4)You may get a Green card in the diversity lottery (UK citizens, except N.Ireland are not eligible)

(5)You own or buy business (does not get you permanent resident status i.e. no green card)
The business must have a minimum value of around $100k (more the better) bearing in mind you will need somewhere to live and with any startup business you will need at least 2 years living money as back up. So a figure of $250k would be a nearer minimum

(6)You are an "investor" i.e. you have at least US $1m in assets to bring with you. And your background will be investigatedto the hilt.

(7)You have a close relative (mother, father, brother, sister and no further) who is an US citizen who would sponsor you, approx time this take 2-12 years…

Recruitment agent will not take you seriously if you are not already in the US. Writing for jobs is really a waste of time; likewise US employers have no idea what foreign qualification are or mean (except Degrees) it may pay you to get your qualification translated into a US equivalent, there are Companies that do this ..
But if you are getting a visa under (2) above then you need a job offer before you can get the visa. Your Employer will be your sponsor this will cost them upward of $3k. So you can see you have to be offering something really special to get considered They may also have to prove to the Dept of labor that there is no American who can do the job if the position is to be permanent

The question is how to get a green card not how to live in the US, Ray.. Buying a business on E2, wont or is unlikely to get you a green card. There are ways around it, ie you go for labor certification on your own business, but only if your qualifications and experience are relevant to that business, ie my law degree would no way get me labour certification for a cleaning or property management company.
Some TV programme in the UK has been telling people you can buy three homes and that is a business sufficient for E2. Buying houses is a passive investment and is not suitable for E2. managing houses can be, but my attorney told me I would have to buy TEN not three to be considered as I could then set up a ten home management co. Even then it was marginal in reaching the required income levels. Ten homes is a considerable amount of money and you might as well invest the $500,000 in an area of low employment and go straight for green card.

The question is how to get a green card not how to live in the US, Ray OK! THERE'S 6 WAYS TO GET A GREEN CARD FOR A STARTER.. I CAN THINK OF A GOOD FEW MORE BUT WOULD NOT APPLY TO MOST PEOPLE..
