Sorry if this has been asked before but what is the tax rate in Florida? I'm trying to figure out the total cost of Discovery Cove - it's $249 + taxes. Out of interest, is the tax rate the same on all goods and services or does it vary by type of goods? Thanks.

I think sales tax is between 6 to 8 percent, would assume its the same rate no matter what you
purchase

The amount of sales tax varies form County to County but it averages about 7%.

I've a feeling it also depends on the county you are in so Osceola County would be slightly different to Orange County for example.
I think as a rule the base Floridian sales tax rate is 6% but the counties can add a little on top if they so decide.

Like VAT in the UK, Florida sales tax applies to most things but not to everything.

In fact, there's a sales tax 'holiday' for some things!

* A sales tax holiday on certain clothing, books, and school supplies from July 24 through August 1.
* A gas tax reduction of 8 cents per gallon during the entire month of August.

Have a look here for more info on sales tax http://www.orlando-guide.info/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6818

It depends what the tax is for as well.

Tax on hotel rooms is 11.5%.

For villa rentals it depends on the County the villa is in. Osceola is now 13%, Polk is 11% (or 10%?) and Lake County is similar.

This is because you are actually paying 2 taxes, the normal sales tax rate being one and the tourism tax being the other. The tourism tax only applies to accomodations (villa or hotel) and not any merchandise or services you are purchasing.
