Dollar use Ford E-350 8 seaters as standard these days; we were given one of those and I saw several around. I expect that other Car Hire companies have similar vans.

One problem with these vehicles is the high chassis, making access difficult for the elderly and those with mobility problems. We found that WAL-MART do a small single-step device for $7.49 that it ideal to overcome this problem. It is very lightweight, folds away into a corner of the van when not in use...and if you don't want to leave it behind at the end of the holiday, packs easily into a suitcase.

What is the seating layout in the 8 seater vans ? (Is it 2 in the front and 2x3 seater bench seats ?)

We ordered a 7 seater and ended up with a HUGE 8 seater - Ford E-150 which sounds like the E-350 you had Nostromo.

The layout is 2 seats at the front and then 2 * 3 seater benches. The trunk is HUGE - we managed to fit a US King Size Bedhead in without folding down any seats!

Dollar's standard 8-seater is a Ford E350 with 2 front seats and two 3-seat 'benches' at the back, plus loads of luggage space. Beware of unwanted 'free-upgrades' to a '12-seater', which is essentially the same van with a third 3-seat bench taking up most of the luggage space.
