To all those facing a long flight who are concerned about how they'll feel now that smoking has been banned on flights, don't despair or try to make up for it with alcohol.

Just get yourself some of those nicotine patches. Make sure you get the top of an individual sachet cut off before you go to the airport as you're not allowed scissors in your hand luggage.

Use one patch after you leave the smoking area before boarding your plane. Remember to remove your patch before you light up that cigarette at the arrival airport (or outside it, if smoking is not allowed inside) or you will feel very ill.

Alternatively, of course, you could continue to use your patches during your holiday or vacation and give up smoking! ;)

And if you don't want to use the patches don't sit with your family<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>.

Chris gave up smoking for 3 years and then took it up again this year. I am threatening to be like the Queen and travel on separate planes! (PS the gals agree with me<img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>!!!)

I like to make it up with alcohol. In particular the free kind<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I smoke sometimes more then one pack a day (espically at the computer) and believe it or not i dont have a problem not smoking those 9 odd hours. But one thing i do not do is eat on the plane. Not that i like the food anyway but that would be the hardest part. I do eat the 2nd meal though as i know in 2 hours i will be landing so its not that bad. And the funny part is even when you get off the plane you cant have one anyway till your out side so there goes at least another 45 minutes. And that first one you light up do you get the head spins or what!! So be careful!!
Just takes alittle hard work mentally and you can all make it thru.

Hi Blott

On our last trip Mick insisted on trying the Nicorete (not sure on spelling) inhaler £19.99 from Boots (at the airport) It looks like a little white plastic whistle, you get around 25 inserts which look like filter tips, just pop one in, we used 2 during the flight. Only problem is if you inhale to deeply it doesn't half make you cough.

Did consider using it for the rest of the holiday, but what would we have done with all the duty free Benson's we had just bought.

regards

I remember that when we went to Bali ( flight time twice that to Florida) I was sitting next to a woman who had got the shakes. She dashed off the airplane and lit up as soon as she got into the terminal with such a look of ecstasy on her face, only to be jumped on by the airport officials as she couldnt smoke in there either. she looked suicidal. It made me so glad I don't smoke and dont have that to contend with. A long flight is bad enough on its own, what with dehydration and worrying about keeping moving your feet because of the fear of DVT without that to contend with as well.

Maybe the non-smokers should make it up with alcohol. That way they can put up with all the smokers that are deprived of their habit.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Well, since I discovered this little trick the patches work for me and I don't drink!

Forgot to buy them before we went last time so had to buy some at the airport and get a kind man in Boots to cut open one sachet for me (amid some rather strange looks at the check-out desk!).

Yes, Debbie, know what you mean about the duty frees. There are three of us and only one smokes so I get 600 - more than enough to compensate!

I'm a non smoker too - but not a non-drinker <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
