Here`s a tester for you experts,

Does anybody know what the requirements are for you to have a gun permit for a handgun in Orlando?
What i mean is do you have to be a citizen, green card holder, E2 visa holder or what to apply for one???

It seems to be that if you're a non-resident alien, then you can't buy a gun unless you have a hunting licence. http://www.vrolyk.org/guns/alien-laws.html

Neil

Out of curiosity could I ask why you would want a hand-gun? can understand someone wanting to do a bit of hunting with a hunting rifle but what would you use a handgun for? Apologies if I'm being too nosy!

Shooting handguns is a sport.

Seeing as how we no longer have that privilege just wondered what the position was in Florida. Hoping to get an E2 visa from a business later in the year.

Oh and as TREV said "shoot anybody who steals my deer" right!![msnwink]

Dont worry Anne Marie, wouldn`t waste bullets on a mouse, a simply trap would do that job just fine[msncry]:D:D

Would have to be one helluva big trap for that Mouse:D:D

I know as a fact the whole procedure of trying to get one is very difficult as they have to do a background check on you and i mean a very very strict check.

This is interesting thread.

Does anyone know if there is anywhere in the 'mouse' area that you can go to in order to shoot guns!?

That sounds a little harsh.

I mean you know, in a controlled manner. I've used a shotgun a couple of times - clay pigeon which I really enjoyed. Perhaps there's something a tad more interesting available in a US state? [msneek]

Say a rocket grenade launcher or a self propelled gun, or something similar? [}:)]

Seriously though - does anyone know if such an opportunity exists?

Thanks

There's paintballing... ;)

Calling into one of the many gunstores will probably give you the info although I don't know about rocket grenade launcher, etc! I think you might be pushing it a bit...

we do still have that privilede, I belong to 2 gun clubs, and yes the rules are a lot stricter
etc, locked gun cases licence, checks etc but I still go shooting twice a week

Colin

I never really fancied paintballing. I just wanna shoot things, or blow them up. Blow up a car from a mile away - that sounds like fun!

Maybe that's my million dollar idea. 'War on Terror' theme park in Orlando. Nuke pretend enemies. Blow up your friends and family. "Beat up Blair" ride.. "Bush Bashing" coaster..

Could be very popular. Remember that you heard it here first! [msnsmile]

Thanks Blott

Hubbie always goes to a shooting range when we're in the US and visited a couple while we were in Florida. One was Rieg's Gun Shop on South Orange Blossom Trail and the other was opposite the Correctional Facility![msnscared]

Had a very interesting and frank discussion with the Assistant there about Gun Law in the US and our UK restrictions. We agreed to disagree but it was very enlightening. Like the fact that a private seller can sell a hand-gun to anyone he chooses without making any background checks. In fact, if he even asks the question "are you a criminal?" he is liable to be sued even when the buyer will obviously lie. Just has to make sure he has a full receipt for cash and weapon exchange, even in it's not worth the paper it's written on. So much for licensing....Madness![}:)]

Anyway, getting off the soapbox, a variety of handguns for hire were on offer for use on their indoor gun ranges and even some semi-automatic (? I'm not into guns but ones like Soldiers carry, Bushranger?, Bushwhacker?, something like that)[:o)] Hubbie had great fun as usual and the staff at both facilities were helpful and informative.

Sorry didn't see any rocket launchers or I'm sure Hubbie would have been firing one![msnwink]

Angua,
Thats exactly what i do each time i go over, straight to a range and blast away for an hour or two, its great for relieving tension. Over years i`ve shot many diferent guns from james bonds walther to dirty harry`s 44 magnum.
This last time in March went to this place on oakridge and got to use a fully automatic 9mm Uzi, if there are any gun nuts out there, you got to try it. (Just off OBT less than a mile down oakridge)

Chris J
Dont exactly know what you mean, i`m a shotgun owner but i was under the impression handguns are illegal since hungerford, i know you can still shoot rifles but not handguns!!!!!

I would recommend to any readers that you try it on a range in the US its fun to just blast away with something you cant get to do in the UK, you never know you may like it.

Neil/Angua,

That's brilliant information - sounds like great fun.

Was it expensive? Some idea of price would be helpful, and were young kids allowed in the building/area (as spectators - not targets! [msnwink] )

Did the price change to use different guns?

Was training provided?

Did you have to prove yourself before going up in calibre etc..

Also - sorry to be thick - where is OBT?

Many thanks for the info - I think this will go on 'Colins' list!

Colin
PS Chris - don't fancy TA - I'm too old plus all that marching and training. Just wanna shoot stuff .... [}:)]

The place where i go is on Oakridge, if you drive from Belz factory outlet along oakridge you eventually cross Orange Blossom Trail (OBT), after crossing OBT the shop is on the right after about half/mile. Its only a small gun shop, but it has a range on the side for about 4 shooters.
Yes they will give training if you require, it costs about $10 for the range and you can just keep going back out with diferent guns (one at a time). The extra cost comes from buying ammo for each gun. I would guess for an hour or two of shooting diferent guns expect to pay $50-60.
The Uzi was extra though add extra $20 for this.
With regard to kids been allowed not sure, i think they let a max of 2 people to one lane, all you need is ID, i used UK driving card.
The shop is cool as they have all kinds of guns on the wall, AK47, sniper rifles, the works, i got them to let me get pics with them all.

Regards,

Neil[msnwink]

Here's something interesting. I relocated to Florida (Jacksonville) about 10 years ago from Nevada. I had some handguns so I called the local police station. I was told I don't have to register handguns in Florida. Ten years later I'm living in North Orlando and I have two Ruger handguns and a couple of black powder 44 cal. replica civil war pistols. None of them registered.
If you want a concealed handgun carrying permit there is a course you have to attend. And I think now you have to have a legitimate reason for needing to conceal your weapon.
But if you just want to shot, go to any weapons range. Most will rent any gun you've ever wanted to shoot!
Just another part of the Great American Dream!

I have a concealed weapon licence..and carry a gun most of the time..
What was the question again?

Ray,

Are you a Brit ?

What did you need to get a licience?

You don't need a license to own a gun. There's a short waiting period while the authorities check that you aren't a homicidial postal worker! Then you can have your gun. I had guns in Nevada before I was a US citizen. My green card was ID enough.

Hi Neil

Are you a Brit ? Yes

What did you need to get a licence? you need a GC and live in florida for 3 months and are require to provide such as utility bills to prove it..Florida is a "shall issue" state. you are not required to tell them why you want it...Without a carry permit you can still own a gun no problem..to keep in the house or car..there are rules but very easy to comply.. currently there are around 330,000 carry permit holders out there in Florida .. the licence cost is $117 for 5 years then $65 for renewal... training cost's vary but can be a little as $60.. But the hardest thing of all is deciding what to carry... Interesting the Florida permit is not only for guns ,,it also permits pepper spray, billy clubs, knives, stun guns..etc.

Hi Ray

Yes i`m a Brit, hoping to get sorted with a business towards end of year or start of next, with an E2 visa (Crossed fingers).

Do i take it from your message that a E2 visa doesn`t qualify for a licience, but a Green Card does ? [msncry]

While i`m asking why do you feel the need to carry a weapon all the time ?, i`ve only ever felt uncomfortable/worried whilst i was in Fort Lauderdale and a guy tried to get money from me as we came out of a restaurant which was off the beaten track, nothing happened but it was a little worrying at the time.
Orlando seems so laid back i wouldn`t have thought you need one, but i guess people get robbed everyday.[msnmad]

Only really wanted one to use on ranges when i need to let off steam.[msnwink]

Unfortunatly the E-2 is not an immigrant visa.. I did give you the link to the Florida State Licensing Dept to give you the actual laws, but you moderators deems that to be offensive or something..I don't actually carry every day per se...but certainly on my travels I do..And most certainly if I go to Orlando with a crime rate there of 3 times the average.. I have never had a problem but the wife has.. Of course as she paid for the licence etc..xmas gift..she expect me to use it..We have a range near us and go down to practice when time permits...of course we are more rural..and things are different.. Orlando is not America..

I'm no expert, but I know there is handgun range up at Beltz. Now I like shopping like I'd like another hole in my head, (it's a man thing - live with it ladies)

Needless to say, Her Highness wanted to do some extremely serious shopping so I decided to take a little walk, and I poked my nose into this place.

I don't care much for guns of any kind, but I have learned not to be judgemental of others. At that time (about two years ago) you only needed your passport as ID. they would charge you $99 for the weapon hire and ordinance, and let you blather the hell out of a piece of paper 30 yards away.

Personally, I have better things to spend $99 on………

Besides if I were to spend that amount of money on popping at a piece of paper, her who must be obeyed would probably have me horse whipped......[B)]

Hope this has been of some use to you.

Took me a while but I've now found the invoices for Hubbie's expeditions to the gunranges in March this year. As I said before, I keep [u]everything</u> from our holidays, just don't always know where it is!!

The first stop was Rieg's Guns at 5512 South Orange Blossom Trail, Orlando, Tel: 407-859-5064.
Here is an idea of the charges...

$6.00 Range Rental $1.00 Eye Protection $1.00 Ear Protection $18.00 Case Rental (unlimited use of any of the guns in display case) $9.95 Box of 9mm Ammo $3.00 Targets (3x$1.00) $13.95 Box of 45 cal Ammo $3.71 Sales Tax TOTAL $56.61

Second stop was the Shooting Gallery, 2911 West 39 Street Orlando, Tel: 407-428-6225 (Cox's Plaza opposite the Orange County Sheriffs Office)

Their charges were very similar with the case rental giving a variety of 9mm guns for $20.00 and $8.00 for a single weapon. Although they didn't charge for eye/ear protection, however this may be because I'd already bought hubbie his own pair of Ear Protectors by this trip so he used them instead.

I don't know if there is a time limit on the range rental as I didn't clock-watch but Hubbie wasn't hurried out and had great fun on each visit.

Lastly, as to spectators, Rieg's ranges are behind a window so you can stand in the shop and watch the shooters and their targets. At the Shooting Gallery, there is no spectator window but you can watch the shooters on a small closed circuit tv in the shop.

Phew! A bit long-winded but gives you an idea of the costs anyway.
