Fishing opportunities - St Petes

After the usual theme park fix in Orlando we are off to St Petes Beach for a couple of weeks in July and if I don't find somewhere for my son (13) to fish whilst out there my life will not be worth living.

I am currently looking at the Skyway fishing pier that looks ok but would appreciate any recommendations for other spots. He's not especially interested in going to sea for the big stuff, more the shore based variety.

My son (9 at the time) caught 6 fish in less than an hour off st petes beach using a $20 rod from wallmart and beef jerk as bait. He thought it was great until my daughter (6 at the time ) caught 8. Ha. All were put back alive and well. The fish that is.

I forgot to say that this was standing on the beach about 1000 meters south of the big posh pink hotel on the beach (can't remember its name even though Ive stayed there. Don something I think.
