[u]Monday, 3rd May 2004 (Day 12):</u> We had kept this day aside for a lot of &#39;bits & pieces&#39; activities, moslty involving water. Originally, we planned to leave the seniors to rest at home and take my niece with the 4 of us. As it was, the two women backed out, pleading exhaustion after 2 previous days at Epcot. The kid decided to stay back with her mother and so we ended up with just the two men, my brother-in-law and I. We were determined to make the best of it and despite an overcast sky and dodgy weather forecast, set out at 9am with our swimming gear in tow.

Our first stop was at Dave&#39;s Ski School of Buena Vista Watersports at Lake Bryan. We had booked the full &#39;Watesports Adventure&#39; session involving Waterskiing, Jetski water scooters and &#39;inner tube&#39; riding. We both had done a bit of Jet Ski before, but during my last attempt at Waterskiing (at Phuket in Thailand in 2002), I had spent more time in the water than above it. So, neither of us were feeling all that confident as we parked and got out at Lake Bryan.

It started to drizzle as we reached the office and the man there told us it was touch and go if there would be a session at all that morning. But Dave turned up promptly at 10am and proceeded to act as though everything was normal. We were the only customers who had braved the weather and turned-up and Dave assured us that we would get more than our money&#39;s worth. He turned out to be a fantastic coach and in the space of 20 minutes of dry land tutoring, had managed to dispel all our misgivings and make us wonder why we had not tried all this before.

We had a go at Waterskiing first. This involved 3 separate circuits around the larger Lake Bryan, with Dave supporting the rider&#39;s left ski with his own right one. After a few wobbles, we both got the hang of it and persuaded him to let us go &#39;solo&#39; on the final run. It was absolutely exhilarating and by now it had stopped raining as well. I fell off my skis just the once, but my stubborn bro-in-law somehow managed to hang on for dear life.

Jet Ski scooters were not a problem and after a couple of circuits with Dave&#39;s assistant, we rented one of our own for half-an-hour and went on several hairy rides around the lake. It started raining with hail in the last run and since I was driving, the hail felt like thousands of needlepricks on my face. Fortunately, the drizzle did not last long enough to spoil our fun.

What I thought would be the least exciting of the trio of rides provided at the school turned out to be the best. &#39;Tube riding&#39; really involves a circular 2 or 4 person inflated raft that is hooked up to a speedboat; the riders lie prone on the raft while the boat makes fast twists and turns all over the lake. Dave let his assistant drive the speedboat and went indoors for some tasks and we tried to cajole the young man to drive the boat as fast and as twistily as he was allowed. Whether he did this or not, the ride was superb. The boat&#39;s twists and turns created a backwash that threw us about the raft, necessitating us holding on grimly to the handles. Somehow we hung on without falling over and after it was over agreed that it was more exhilarating than any rollercoaster ride thar we had experienced so far. I thoroughly recommend Dave&#39;s Ski School for anyone interested in watersports. You can be an absolute novice and still have a great time.

It was 12:30 by the time we finished and changed, returned to the van and drove to Disney&#39;s Contemporary Resort. We had a lunch table booked at the Concourse Steakhouse after which, we had a parasailing session at Sammy Duvall&#39;s Watersports based at the Resort&#39;s lake. I want to mention here that I have a soft corner for the Contemporary Resort with its pseudo-futuristic design reflected in almost everything, including the chairs in the lobby. I know that a hotel like that would probably be very out of place in a lot of other locations, but in Orlando it is just right. I think the Contemporary Resort reflects the Di

I've always wondered about Skull Kingdom and now I know what it is I'm going to add it to the "to do" list for October.

Do you think the water sports at Lake Bryan would be suitable for a 13 year old?
If so I'm going to book it for Hubby and son and I'll pop into Premium outlets while they play!

An excellent report yet again Nosromo. We have not tried any of these things and it was great reading about them, thanks :)

The 'Water Sports Adventure' at Lake Bryan will be mind-numbingly ideal for an active 13 year old.

What is the cost for the Lake Bryan adventure? Sounds like alot of fun!!

I think we paid something like $65 per head for the full adventure at Lake Bryan. I need to double check. I'll get back to you on that.

Correction. We paid $55 each for the sports adventure at Dave's lasting two and a half hours plus $25 flat for that extra jet ski rental. The Disnified Parasailing at Sammy Duvall's was considerably more expensive at $80 per head for the session. But Dave does not offer parasailing and so we had to go to Sammy Duvall's.

Brilliant, thanks Nostromo, he is very active!! Loves all sports but has never tried water skiing, jet skis, or the tube rides - I'm going to surprise him with this as a treat.

Again, a great report Nostromo - I keep popping in and out of the trip reports area to see whether you have posted again. I think my two kids would have nightmares after skull kingdom, so that will have to wait till they are older, but the Water Sports Adventure sounds brilliant for me.

I tried parasailing in Miami many years ago and can remember how 'silent' it was up there(apart from the sound of the wind)

Keep them coming
:D

Great report Nostromo and good to read about something different. Thanks for all the effort you have put in with these reports. Just makes me want to be there:(

Do you have a website for Sammy Deval's Watersports please?

Oops! The oranges are strictly not to be picked! We always wanted to taste them, but was written into the contract of sale that the oranges were not to be touched. Not to worry, they let you home again at least! Just thought you might be interested to know, I'll find out the details and update...!

Excellent report again Nostromo. Your watersports day sounded fantastic and that will definitely be on the list when my kiddies are a little older.

I have always thought of myself as a "water baby" having grown up by the sea and all hobbies relating to water but I never could get the hang of waterskiing at all!

We were staying on Orange Tree at the same time and had exactly the same urge as Nostromo but felt we had better not until we found out whether it was legal or not.

It got more tempting the later we arrived back at the Villa after dinner (darkness the villains friend ;)) , at one point I had to frighten my fellow passengers with tales of Racoons and Mossies in the Orange Groves to stop a moonlight raid being organised. [msneek]

I did notice four State Trooper cars, a helicopter and an FBI team dusting for prints on the day after Nostormo mentions above and I believe several Oranges were used to view suspects in an identity parade at MCO but you and the other Perps ovbviously slipped through Nostromo [msnwink].

Thanks MrE. Actually, I curbed my own orangy urges well and never picked a fruit myself, although I confess to eating a few later on. I forbade the others to do so too and everyone except my airheaded sis-in-law coplied. She claimed that she only picked fruit from trees within private property when the owner actually invited her to do so. As I have said before, I saw my sis-in-law talking animatedly to this other lady, but whether that person really owned the property is another matter - I cannot be sure. But it was broad daylight and no one seemed to notice or mind, so maybe the story is true.

I'll do it today. The problem is, my Indian relatives are going back in 6 days and there is a lot of packing and other inter-activity to do. Moreoever, I have got bit of the dreaded paperwork backlog from work.

Excellent report again Nostromo.
We hired a boat and driver last year at Daves to do some water-skiing and had a billiant time,(the water was a strange colour though - something to do with the trees surrounding the lake) they have a website if anyone is interested, (www.bvwatersports.com), not sure if that will get edited but if it does you can do a google search for "Buena Vista Watersports".

Dave says he can teach anyone from 3-99, and its true. THe way he does it, is to balance on awide trick ski, while helping you up on yours, by putting his under it. He has been doing this for years and years, and is very good.
