:DState to lower gas tax 8 cents for 1 month and suspend sales tax on clothes, books for 9 days
Drivers could see slightly lower gas prices for a month this summer and shoppers will get a nine-day break from the state sales tax on books, clothes and school supplies under legislation signed Thursday by Gov. Jeb Bush.
The bill containing the sales-tax break and a temporary 8-cent cut in the gas tax was passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature this year.
The 6 percent break will be given on books and clothing priced at $50 or less and back-to-school items priced at $10 or less.
It will run July 24 through Aug. 1.
The gas-tax cut will knock 8 cents per gallon from the 14.3-cent state gas tax throughout August. Suppliers are expected to pass the break on to wholesalers, who in turn will give it to the retailers, whom lawmakers expect to cut prices at the pumps.
