View Full Version : Duelling Dragons vs The Hulk vs Kraken

I am sure a comparison of the 3 big rollercoasters in Orlando is of interest to coaster freaks like me. I had been on all three before, but this time. I sat with my brother-in-law on all three rides and we compared notes afterwards, paying attention to strong points. Moreover, we were there on quiet days and were able to go on each ride twice.

First off Duelling Dragons; as the only suspension coaster(s) of the three, its mechanisms are different from the other two. Loops and corners tend to be more thrilling due to the fact that the rider is 'dragged away' from the rails by the centrifugal force. But drops are less effective because the sensation of hanging onto something is actually increased. Perhaps that is the reason why neither Fire nor Ice have big drops like the other two coasters.

We were doing IoA anti-clockwose and so arrived at DD by 10:30am with hardly any crowd; in fact neither coaster was more than 70% full. But we waited in the front row queues and were able to get in on the third turn with Ice and second with Fire. Both were excellent rides, but of the two I preferred Ice for that twisting corner and close encounter with the castle wall. Strangely, despite our first rows, the three 'duels' did not seem that scary, perhaps because the encounters were so short and quick. Overall though, the ride was great and we both gave Duelling Dragons 9 out of 10.

It was past 4pm by the time we went on The Hulk and the sun was right in our faces as we rode it. The crowd was still limited and we did not need UEs. This time we got the last row of the coaster (without much trying) on the first ride and then the first row (harder - 2 turn waits). There is no question that Hulk is a better ride from the back - it seems faster and more physical. The front row is good, but the sudden rush out of the tunnel and the twist before the drop comes too quickly and one does not have the time to get too scared. You feel the effects better from the back. Moreover, the front row does not offer the big difference on the Hulk because, with a solid floor under you and the coaster's green nose sticking out in front, one does not feel so exposed. All in all though, Hulk was a great experince too and I gave it 9 out of 10 while my brother-in-law gave 9.5.

We went to Sea World on the following day and rode the Kraken. There was a lot of haphazard movement about the park because of the shows and it was early afternoon by the time we rode the monster. We went on the front row first and then the back row; there were separate queues for both and we got in on the third turn each time. It was simply fantastic on both occasions. The Kraken comes closest to the perfect rollercoaster of the hundreds that I have ridden in my time. The design achieves the best of both worlds - conventional 'riding' coaster but without a floor. The gradual climb to the summit is perfect, giving you the chance to build-up adrenalin, then the turn and level out giving the riders a great view of the steep drop. The main ride also has all the best elements with the loops, twists, rolls and even underground dives. While the view was better from the first row, the back row took the honors for physical effects. Neither of us had any hesitation in giving the Kraken a perfect 10.

Thanks for that Nostromo, you've just managed to convince me that I was 100% correct for refusing to go on these 3:D;):D

My husband and son love all 3 and agree that Kraken is the best of the bunch:)

I have not done the IOA rides but did Kraken once a few years ago and it was the scariest coaster I have ever done. When Harriet (my middle child and a real dare devil) is tall enough, I have no doubt I will go on it again[msnscared] I just hope she grows slowly[msnwink]

Thanks for that. Having been on all of them as well, I reckon you are right about Kraken. It's ace.

I love the Kraken. Did you do Montu at Busch as I think that is better ( or worse as the case may be).

I'll be doing all 3 in July for the first time :D Really can't wait now after reading that! I'll be the one laughing hysterically as I get flung around :D

Unfortunately, I'll probably be riding alone as everyone in my group appear to be enormous wimps lol.

Just reading Nostromo's report has made me feel ill!!

I agree with Andrew - Tower of Terror and Big Thunder Mountain are thrilling enough for me!!

It's a funny thing, been on Tower of Terror and Hulk several times and I am OK with them. Chickened out of the Dualling Dragons when in the queue and still don't think I could do it. Kraken is probably in same category. (I'm now getting to the stage where I read the warning lists in the queues and wonder which ones apply to me - other than pregnancy)
Great reports Nostromo, keep them coming.

I've been on Tower of Terror once and will never go on it again !
It's the only ride that has made me feel ill.

Kraken and Dragons are both good rides but my favourite is Hulk.

I've got no problems with coasters now after overcoming a bit of a fear. I never hesitate to go any now but you'll never get me back on Tower of Terror !

I am the bag lady at these rides, so Andrew it's no good even talking to me about tower of terror, because I am NEVER going on it! I got talked into Splash Mountain once and never again!

However I think the gals faves are Kracken, Hulk and Duelling Dragons, and I think a trip to Busch Gardens is in order soon as they only got 1 go on Montu before it shut down and verdict was wow!

I love the Tower of Terror as does Harriet. Even James (age 3) did it twice in quick succession at Christmas:D

Kate, my wife, was on the middle back seat on tower of terror; the seat with just a strap across no bar.
Now i have a classic photo of her but my marriage may be under strain if i somehow manage to up(down?) load it here[}:)]

To be honest, I did not find the Tower of Terror scary at all, though it was a great and very thrilling ride. We went twice and the ride was slightly different each time. I was more worried about a small child next to me, in case she came loose from the straps. I cannot belive that she was above the regulation height. Someone must have slipped up.

I think the Scariest Disney ride is the Summit Plummet at Blizzard Beach; the scariest of all rides in Orlando is The Slingshot in Old Town.

Another vote for Montu, this is the best Inverted coaster I have been on. Of the three biggies mentioned by Nostromo I have to go with (in order of best first)Kraken, Hulk and the Duelling Dragons Ice then Fire.

I also think the start of R n Roller coaster is very good (it gets pants after the first drop!) especially if you sit next to someone who is a first timer and a driver. Its great to watch them stamp down hard with their right foot as it launches off trying to apply a mythical brake :D

Kraken is a fantastic coaster , while we were there some time ago somebody was trying to set a record of staying on it the longest none stop , when we went on he had been on there for 6 hours [V][V][V]
