View Full Version : Driving from Miami to Orlando
What's the quickest and what's the most scenic route.
For the most scenic (probably used on the Miami to Orlando Leg of our holiday) - I was thinking of taking the A1A all the way up the coast to Cape Canaveral and then across on the Bee Line Expressway?
For the quickest (on the was back to Miami to get a 18:30 flight) I was thinking of Using the Florida Turnpike all the way down?
Are there many tolls on this road?
How long do you think it's likely to take?
Thanks in advance...
Hi Gareth,
We have used the Coast Road, Turnpike and the US 27 on different visits. All our family much prefer the US 27. We found it a much quieter scenic journey.
There are several toll booths on the Turnpike but I cannot remember the exact number.
Hope you have a great vacation and safe journey whichever route you choose.
Mike.
Hi,
The quickest is definately the turnpike, there are only really two toll booths (as long as you stay on) - one where you pick up the ticket and the second (nr the end) to pay.
The toll had just gone up last time I was there (the first time in 10 yrs!), and is now $13.70.
On a good run, it should take you around 4hrs.

We live in Florida(Boca raton)and by far the quickest is the turnpike and it is by far the most exspensive.$13 only gets you to Lantana in w.palm beach, shy by 50 miles.A good altenative is to head east to I95 and keep going south untill you see the sign 'Miami airpot' (about 200 miles.)If you can travel off peak times your journey would be much more relaxing, and avoid 4pm-7pm rush hour between ft lauderdale and miami at all costs on any road or catching your flight could be in jeopady. As mentioned the 27 isn't a bad way to travel(its equivalent in the uk would be the A1 )As for A1a, i have serious doubts it could be done in a single day????
Good luck and enjoy the ride.

We did from the keys to Orlando , from the keys to the start of the turnpike it took 5 hrs , from then on it was another 5 hours to hit kissimmee , cost us $14 which was great as we hardly saw any other cars and there are coffee stops every 30 km`s.

Hi Gareth,
We drove up from Miami two years ago, and I am one for taking the off the beaten track route. We drove up the coast road approx., half way and then joined the turnpike for the last 80-100 miles. Total time from Miami Beach to Splendid China on US192 about 5 hours.
Enjoy your stay in Florida. [msnsmile]

I've done it 3 times in the last month. I would not advise the A1A unless you have lots of time. It is the scenic alternative though. Turnpike is the fastest route like everyone has mentioned. There is another way I go which is the Turnpike up to Yehaaw Junction and then across US60 to join US27. This offers both speed and a bit of scenary. From Miami this route is about 4 hours with no delays although there are roadworks on the Turnpike right before Yehaaw Junction and again on the US60, but nothing that slowed me down considerably.
Happy Driving:)
Many thanks for all of your answers.
As for what we'll do - I guess it'll be turnpike all teh way back (Don't want to miss that flight [msnwink] ) but going up, maybe we'll do the A1A until we get fed up and then cut across to the turnpike for the remainder...
I'll let you all know how it goes.
