Having never been to AK before, I want to have some idea of the new road layout in the vicinity of the park. For instance, I have heard that it is a bit awkward to turn from the Osceola Parkway into Sherberth Road because of a Bus Lane. Can someone please give me the details of this arrangement?

I got a map if that's any use (it is almost 1mb in size though so wait a while for it to load).
I think it came from the disney site but don't know where.

You need adobe acrobat reader which is free from
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

You can zoom right in for good detail.

I can't remember any problems getting to/from AK when were there in December (or in fact any parks and it was my first time driving).

It is a sharp turn and Sherberth Road is very windy so don't hare along, but there are traffic lights at the end of the Osceola Parkway so dead easy to get into.

Brizzle, it is a very good map but like most others, does not show Sherberth Road or Black Lake Road, which are the short cut routes. The problem seems to be how to get into Sherberth Road from Osceola Parkway; someone said that buses coming from I-4 region can turn directly left from OP into Sherberth, whereas cars have to first turn RIGHT at the lights and then bear left. This is the bit that I don't understand.

Nostromo, I can't picture the part that you are referring to. As far as I can recall, you go past the entrance to AK, take first left then right onto Black Lake Road to cut behind McDonalds etc before joining the 192 further up?!

That's what I asked you before Tink and am still waiting for you to feed back on. There IS a potential direct link between Osceola Parkway and US192 via the northern section of Black Lake Road. This shorcut does not involve Sherberth Road at all and saves nearly 4 miles overall. But the administrator from another forum tells me that this part of BLR is closed for repairs. Therefore, it looks like we will hwve to use the second best option (Sherberth Road) unless you know otherwise.

The Black Lake Rd shortcut behind the 192 is here

http://www.brizzle.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/black_lake_rd_map.gif

if that's any help.

I can see the Serberth Rd turning but it doesn't give any indication of bus lanes. I can upload a version of that map if you want.

Thanks brizzle. This map looks VERY useful and I'd like to have a printout. But is it possible to include the bit where Osceola Parkway approaches AK Lodge? Thanks.

OK, I have tried to paste two together. I have included Osceola Parkway, AK and Sherberth Road down to the 192. Hope it is useful.

This is taken from MS Mappoint. With the laptop and a gps mouse it is extremely easy to find my way around :).
If you see a weirdo with a laptop on his lap in a car (the wife will be driving of course [:p]) wave as it's probably me. I think I'm over there the same time as you....

Black Lake Road joins Sherbeth road which then leads to the Osceola Parkway.
Depending on which side of Sherbeth you are staying will determine whether you use Black Lake or not. East of Sherbeth simply use Sherbeth, West of Sherbeth Road and you can use Black Lake as an alternative to the 192 to join up at Sherbeth, having said that if the traffic is OK stay on the 192 until Sherbeth as the junction from Black Lake to Sherbeth is very tight and has a "blind" spot.

There is no direct link from Black Lake Road to Osceola Parkway.

Hope this helps
Jen.

Yes, I have heard about this. Locals tell me that it is fine to turn RIGHT from Sherberth Road into Black Lake Road, but not the left turn the other way around because of the blind spot near Holiday Inn.

No, not yet; but there will be. The old northern section of Black Lake Road used to go past the area where the AK Lodge now stands; this part is entirely in Orange County and connects the Western end of Osceola Parkway to US192 near Marker #4. This road 'disappeared' for a while when Disney bought out property in the area to build the AK Lodge; but a slightly re-roted version is being constructed in the next few years. This info is direct from one of the Managers of the "West US192 Beautification Project".

Very sorry Nostromo that I havn't been able to be more help, but as I told you I don't know the road names. I'm afraid that's the best directions I can give you, and I think the route you are trying to find out about we have never done.

Hope you now have it answered.

Please do not apologise! After all, YOU were trying to do ME a favour, and I should be grateful. The road situation in that area is confusing (and will be even more so in the near future), but I think that I have the picture now.

All will become clear when you get there! I love entering Disney by this route as you get to see so much, you feel like a Cast Member seeing backstage!

BUT [thanks to sharing it on the Forums :)] I can tell you it is SOOOOO Busy, and has police cars on it day and night - we actually went up 192 to main entrance one day, and it was quieter!!!:D
THere is a lot of building of condo's and stuff around the corner of Sherberth/Black Lake, and I had heard it rumoured that they were going to close off apart from Creche staff -my Pool guy is usually good!:D

well the other news is that the new road in to Disney is oppen.
We went up the new beltway 429 from the 192 to get to SR50 today. ($2 by the way to go the whole way to the 50) Disney was clearly signposted, its the old Hartzog road . Did not actually go down it , but it appears no toll to get off the 429. When we go to Disney that way will let you know where it comes in to Disney.

By the way, Sherberth Road was OK when we used it the other daay, but that was during the daay and not late at night. I stand to be corrected about it being busy at other times ans in the summer

$1 toll from 192 to Disney from the 429 but unsure of the toll back. much better than BLR & Sherbeth depending on which part of 192 you want. Suits mile 4 towards H27 best.

We used the new road today. Its $1 each way if you go all the way from the 192 to Disney. It brings you out on Buena Vista Drive. Coronado Springs is just to your left and Blizzard Beach to your right.
