View Full Version : Travel Insurance
Can anyone recommend where we can get good travel insurance for my parents without paying an arm or a leg. My father will be 66 when we travel and my mother 65, both are in excellent health but have been getting extremely high quotes for insurance. They did get a quote on the internet which was very low, but we had not heard of the company and we want to make sure they have adequate cover, eg medical etc. Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks[msnsmile]
I used to use the travel insurance link on this forum for my parents but unfortunately their rates for OAPs have shot up recently:(Therefore I recommend you try SAGA or Age Concern (one does an annual policy and the other doesn't, I can't remember which it is, sorry[:I]). I arranged annual couple insurance for my parents and my PIL this way:)I still use the link on here for our family annual policy and that is excellent.

My parents ages 65 & 62 usually go with an annual insurance with Tesco, don't know how they compare with other companies though.[msnsmile]
We use TPS very reasonable www.tpsltd.com
Pluto
I recommend that you give Charter Travel a call they gave me a good price for my parents who are both in there late 60's

You may not believe this but American Express sometimes come up with surprisingly good quotes for senior citizens. When we shopped around, they were nowhere in the picture for ourselves (47 and 46 and in good health), while they were easily the best for my in-laws who are in their 70s and have minor age related ailments.
Thanks a lot everyone. Those are all places I haven't tried yet.:)
We had trouble getting decent priced insurance for my mother-in-law and her sister (ages 68 and 75 respectively). After searching through loads of sites, the cheapest we could find for a single trip was with www.gotravelinsurance.co.uk
try flexicover.co.uk ive got my inlaw 74 for 237 for annual multi trip..
we spent quite a while on this subject in the past..
best of luck

So do my in-laws, but the cover seems to be rather basic. Isn't it better to have a $5 million each medical cover for the US?
I wasnt aware it was only basic cover.

I didn't know that OV did insurance cover as well, whereabouts is the link please?
I recently used Kingfisher, based on recommendations from a few forum members as I've got pre-existing health problems and they covered me for the normal price rather than load the premium. Also, I subsequently recommended them to my In-Laws and they found it much cheaper, even with the usual age-related health issues.
I'm sure the link to Kingfisher is on the Forum but if you can't find it, PM me.
Just got a copy of my banks "free" insurance docs (Co Op using Norwich Union Insurance), cover seems quite good and medical cover is £10 million.

This is the company that i found on the internet. Do you recall what the cover was ie how much medical cover 5 million or 10. They were very reasonable - but I wasn't sure whether it was too cheap[msnsmile2]

On the subject of insurance, where do people recommend for buying a family annual insurance policy[?]
Mike
OOps sorry. Just looked on the Go Travel site again and found all the details of the policy.
It is £5 million medical cover. I take it this is about the norm, although Boots/Post office are giving £10 million medical cover but for twice the premium if you are over 65. Think we are just going to have to pick one and go for it. I know the chances of needing to claim are pretty low, but I dont want anyone to be under-insured. Must say Norwich union looks pretty reasonable as well.

Its always worth making sure you are fully covered. We thought that the chances of claiming were remote. However four years ago when in Las Vegas our sister-in-law fainted outside one of the hotels and had an ambulance ride and intravenous drip which ended up costing £1400 and then last year Sarahs Dad kept getting nose bleeds which eventually had to be treated at the ER and so far this has cost over £1000 and the bills are still coming.[msnscared]

We bought a family annual policy with virgin last year, it runs out in the middle of our planned holiday this year though, so we will need a new one. We paid £99 last year for this and Ray got air miles.
Thats a good price and with air miles as well not bad at all
Having just turned to the magic age of 65, our Norwich Union premium doubled.
we got World Wide cover for 2 for £86 from M & S. Even Saga could not compete with that!:D
We tried Saga for the golden girls thinking that a speciality company would offer cheaper rates for pensioners. We quickly went somewhere else when the quote came back at over £300 for a single trip, worldwide policy !
Our annual policy is around £84.99 (2 adults and a child) from www.insureandgo.co.uk while the single trip, pensioner policy was £124 from www.gotravelinsurance.co.uk.
The cover is fairly standard on both.

We use http://www.insureandgo.com/ I paid £60 for joint anual cover last year (excluding baggage which is on my household policy).
Hmmm - is it OK to put that link in?
We use http://www.direct-travel.co.uk and have done for years. They usually take some beating for annual policies. Current on line quote is £72 for a family policy (it was only £50 last year). There's only 4 of us but I just tried it with 2 adults and 7 kids and it still came up the same price! 7 seems to be the maximum. Imagine having to pay airfares for that lot! An added bonus is that they will include "kids" up to age 23 if still in education - about the only financial advantage I've seen so far of having offspring at university! Medical cover is 10 million, not sure about the other limits as like Chris I've mislaid the paperwork but as I recall everything looked OK/adequate.
