4 DAY TOUR
When Spanish explorers arrived in the early 1500s, Florida had already been occupied for over 10 centuries. Called Paleoindians, these people developed complex cultures and, by 500 B.C., the native societies of Florida were building burial mounds and later, temple mounds. These pre-Columbian cultures were rich in traditions and beliefs, many of which now speak to modern archaeologists through the artifacts that continue to emerge from the ancient Florida soil. Descendants of Native American tribes, specifically the two recognized tribes in Florida, the Seminole and Miccosukee tribes, have lived in southeastern North America for over 12,000 years and still exist in the Florida Everglades today.

On this four-day tour, you can visit several sites of major significance to Florida’s Native Americans. Starting at the central Gulf Coast, you’ll see several spectacular mound sites, visit a historic battlefield, explore museums in central west Florida, and then journey across The Everglades and southeast Florida to see the modern-day Seminole and Miccosukee Indian tribes on their reservations. This journey covers only a few of the Native American homelands located throughout Florida. Additional Florida Native American sites of interest are listed at the end of the tour. You may wish to use these resources to either expand upon this tour, or plan a future driving tour of your own.

For more information about Florida Native American Indian reservations and historic sites in Florida, call Florida Seminole Tourism (954-370-3900 or 305-257-2134) for travel packages; Miccosukee Tribe of Florida (305-223-8380); Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research (850-487-2299); Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Recreation and Parks (850-488-9872); or the Florida Governor’s Council of Indian Affairs, Inc.
