My husband and I have been contemplating a move to the US for some time. We're not in any great rush to do this so will attempt the H1B route (I know the quota has been reached this year)

We are both Cisco Certified, with my hubby being a CCIE (highest accreditation) so I believe that when the Tech market picks up again we will have a chance.

Can anyone recommend any good agencies/ sites for this type of work?

I take it by US you're meaning in Florida? Well, there's this https://www.myfloridajobs.com/empcenter/index.cfm and also the local newspapers online http://www.orlandosentinel.com

The high tech job market doesn't have that many openings and, like the UK, is relatively over subscribed. US employers will normally give consideration to qualified US workers before considering aliens as this is one of the employment criteria for taking on aliens. Having said that, you may be lucky and find just the job for you both!

I would keep an eye outin the UK for jobs advertised with US companies. They come up infrequently but if you're not in a terrible hurry you should find something that suits you. The usually do initial interviews in London and if you have the skills they need they will sort out your visa. All the usual Tech mags/job websites will cover them.

Thank you Blott. We're not restricting our search to Florida, we would prefer this but appreciate it's not the most lucrative IT market. I'm prepared not to work initially as I'm studying for a few more years yet, and can do that almost as easily from US as UK.

Just thought it would be wise to start making speculative enquiries and get a feel for what's out there!

My husband has several CISCO Certs, and with other companies also. He does very well as a sales engineer designing networks, but goes to work everyday wondering when the next lay off will be. He has survived 4 layoffs in the 3 years with his current company. He was layed off from his previous company after being there 20 years. There are alot of unemployed Americans waiting for the tech industry to pick up. You may want to go in a different direction or you may be waiting a long time.

The Market in the UK is awash with IT Network Specialists, im sure the same applies
to the American market. Where I work we are all about to be made redundant and even
with our qualifications, its going to be hard to get work.

Anyway that aside Good Luck Ana

It will be hard. There is a thing called labor certification where your employer needs to prove to the authorities that they cant find an American to do the job and to be frank the market is awash here with Americans looking for IT work. I think Angela is right, look for a US firm with an office in the UK or a UK firm with an office in the US and get in on the UK side, then angle for a transfer out on L1.

We were going through the same thing with Lucent...you never know when you job will go....we lived through 5 lay offs before my husband lost his job.......but because of a company buy back he was out of work for only 5 days......the company is now going great guns.....and will be looking for people very soon....but with the high cost of living on Cape Cod.....its going to be hard finding people to move here......and I can't see the company paying to relocate for a long time yet......they seem to be bring back people who once worked there before looking outside......

I think we did the last time someone asked about IT work in the USA......its been a bad few years over here.....we really want to move down to FL....but its finding a safe job.....the cost of living on the Cape is high.......we were in FL for a month 6 of us.....it cost $70 for heating ...A/C and light etc..for a month....here its costs nearly $400 for 4 of us for a month......

:(

Yep, your right there. The most expensive bill we have is our council tax. £180 a month,
Gas, Electric, Water, phone etc all average out approx £20 each per month
