You can get US cell phones from either Tracfone or Virgin which are pay as you go but whether you can call the UK from the USA with them is another question. We've got a Tracfone but I've never tried doing that.

If you're buying a Florida home, then you'll obviously have the home telephone to use which is (normally) considerably cheaper than using a mobile to call and for which you can purchase phone cards nearly everywhere.

Are the phone cards you talk about for public (pay) phones or for the ones in villas? If so, how do you use them?
What money do public coin payphones use? and how much would you expect a short call to the UK to cost?

You can use phone cards for either public coin pay phones or phones in homes. Your phone card you purchase has an access number on it which you dial and then enter the code number on the card and then dial the number you're calling - they're pretty easy as they all have instructions on them.

I've not used a public coin payphone for some time but I seem to remember that they accept quarters (25 cents) coins but they may accept other coins too. I've absolutely no idea how much a short phone call to the UK would cost but I'm pretty sure you'd need a fairly large bag of coins!
