When we were last in America we were confused by a set of lights. We were at the front of the queue, so couldn't just follow what other were doing. We were on a side street to enter a main street,. The lights were red then went to flashing yellow. We weren't sure what to do, and some traffic was going along the main road. then they went red again. Next time they went to yellow flashing we decided we just had to go when it looked safe. Was this correct? It was very scary!

Are there any other anomalies like this we should know about?

Flashing amber means 'proceed with caution' so you did right.

You can turn right on a red light if there's no sign to the contrary but make sure that you actually come to a stop before you do this for a few seconds. Be careful and make sure that you look every way you can think of where traffic might appear from as some big junctions can be quite confusing.

Lots of junctions have separate traffic lights for turning right or left so you need to wait for the light to change for your particular lane.
