This year we are flying to Orlando via Newark for the 1st time. Will we be able to shop duty free in MCO on arrival and departure, or as because the EWR/MCO/EWR are classed as internal, we will have to do any duty free shopping in EWR?

Think you will have to do your shopping in Newark. Duty Free in my experience is poor in the US as the majority of flights tend to be internal so any shops do not offer much of a range. I think the Duty Free shop in MCO is owned by the same company who own the shop at Manchester
Be careful where the duty free is located and how they give you the goods.
You will be going on an internal flight so will not be able to carry any bottles of liquid that you have had access to as part of the security. You may be able to pack it as part of your luggage if you are changing airline and your bags have not been routed straight through. However you are normally not allowed to open bags in the customs area.
Given the hassle level we stopped getting duty free after 9/11 as it was not worth the saving to us. It all depends on what you want.

On your return leg your baggage will be checked through to the UK so no opportunity to pack liquids in the cases.
You will go through security again at Newark so the 100ml of liquid will apply.
US duty free in our opinion is not a great saving and quite often the local liquor stores sometimes offer excellent prices, this can be packed in your suitcase.
We have also come to the conclusion the small savings are not worth it especially with the weight restrictions on cases.

Champagne can be a bargain at MCO, they always had a habit pricing stuff wrong. Often found vintage stuff priced as non vintage, I dare say it's changed now but worth a mooch.
