Hi All,

We are off to Florida on the 28th of April until the 15th of May and are renting a car from Alamo. My driving License expires the day we get back to the uk (16th of May) am I correct in thinking that as long as it is valid during our trip it is fine (i.e you dont need an extra 3 months like a passport?) I am sure this will be ok but want to feel better about it as I cant stop worrying. If any of you can put my mind at ease I would really appreciate it.

If you're really worried then renew before you travel, I recently did mine and I had it back in under a week.

Thats the other worry now tho that if I send it off to renew what with all the bank holidays etc I worry I wont get it back in time!!!

I agree with Caroline and renewed mine early and it took about a week. Make sure you photocopy your license before sending it off. You have more than enough time if you get on and do it now.

I don't think the expiry date will be an issue, other than if you have to extend your trip unexpectedly for some reason you would not be able to continue driving the car legally. It is a bit of a risk if you send off your license just in case it doesn't come back in time. The rental companies will not accept anything other than the original license (not a photo copy nor a letter/fax from DVLA).

It is actually your photo that expires, not your entitlement to drive the class of vehicle(s) you have a licence for. Also, last November, my photo had run out but no problem with Alamo. Out of interest, I updated my photo online, new licence arrived within 3 working days, kept the old one until then. Go to

My husband also rented a car with his photo out of date. The paper part actually shows the licence expiry date. They didn't even question it.

Quick Q on the license thing, there is a mistake on my name only noticed as we get ready to go May 9'th,
Do they just take your license or do they take your passport as well,

Asking as I may take the gamble or if they check both ID's I'll need license off to get sorted

Thanks

If you update online as above, you won't need to send your licence. I always offer passport with licence anyway.

All you need is photo ID, so as long as you have the newer type of license then you won't need to show your passport. Make sure your name on your license matches the name on your car rental booking.
